On Monday, Iraq's president asked Ibadi to form a new government, despite opposition from Maliki, who has said he wants a third term as prime minister.
"The country is now in your hands," Massoum told deputy parliamentary speaker Ibadi, in a televised ceremony. "I hope you will be successful in forming a broader-based government."
Massoum's request came despite a legal ruling by Iraq's highest court earlier on Monday declaring that Maliki's Shiite-led State of Law political bloc was the largest grouping in parliament.

A power-play on Maliki's part? A little strongarming, perhaps?
We shall see. I also just this story on the Al Jazeera English site as well as Al Arabiya.
I'd like to hope that al-Maliki isn't actually stupid enough to attempt some kind of putsch while his country is being ravaged by frothing-at-the-mouth, gibbering lunatics. But like they say....hope in one hand and, well - you know the rest.
bttt
The thing is that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Maliki and his party (who did win a majority, just not a big enough one) which means it’s the other guy who’s staging the putsch. His party is supposedly more Islamist, btw, which is not good.
DC clearing away the last opposition to ISIL?
That’s true.
I suspect Iraqi politics just got exponentially more interesting.
I guess if I’d been charge back then, I would’ve based my model of occupation on the post-WWII models we employed in Germany and Japan; both were highly successful and yielded very positive long-term results.
Maybe throw in a sort of “Marshall Plan” as well to sweeten the pot.
... but ... but that would make us evil, white imperialists...
The Al jezeera site declared the stories about a military coup to be false
Yep! Day late, a hundred billion dollars short.
But GWB listened to the state department and we got this instead.
Just the guy Comrade Obama wants in charge in Iraq. A former communist and now radical leftist. All hail dear Leader. His choices are always spot on.

As the good general once said...
“in war there is no substitute for victory”
THE BIPARTISAN POLICE WARS WAGED SINCE WORLD WAR II BY THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT AND DEMOCRATS UNDER UNITED NATIONS RULES AND OR AUTHORITY INCLUDING IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN HAVE LED US TO THIS POINT.....
Well, the Palestinians elected Hammas to represent them so this doesn’t surprise me. Scratch a muzzie ... find a nazi.
Yes, he’s a radical leftist, but it also read that he was sympathetic to miss and is buddies with Erdogan, an Islamist who also just got reelected (with a very low turnout...are the Turks scared of him?).
This is why you dont’ engage in ‘nation building’. Six months of bombing and destruction then done and out would have left us better off today then we are from trying to build nations in our own image.
Iraq should have been a punitive military mission, but the media sold us the Powell doctrine years ago.
We should have the “if you break it — break it some more” doctrine.
Buuuuttt you first have to have a population that is at least willing to learn how to use a flush toilet. And can maybe read the instruction sheet on the paper roller. We’re at least 200 years away from getting at least a “seed” group in the ME. While there has been a great deal of westernization the group of people is small and young so far. Using a flame thrower on the trouble makers is the best approach in the short term.
Islamist = ISIS or
Islamist = Iran
?
It doesn’t matter, Iraq is now WEST IRAN.....and we are bombing Iran’s enemy......and you know how they will say thank you?
