ROME – For anyone familiar with the Vatican’s recent history of bitter opposition to any US use of military force in the Middle East, Rome’s increasingly vocal support for the recent American airstrikes in Iraq may seem, to say the least, a little disorienting.

On Monday, the Vatican’s previously tacit approval for the American intervention turned explicit, as two senior officials offered what amounts to a blessing through official communications channels....

Too bad we can’t post excerpts from the Globe. John Allen usually knows what’s what at the Vatican.

The article is very interesting. I urge people to read it with an open mind.

I expect nothing more than token gestures from the United States. Historically, we have not been good friends to Catholic populations. Obama and Bush before him have been solicitous of Saudi concerns, far more than Christians, whether in the Middle East, Africa, or the Balkans.

In September 2013, when the Obama administration announced that it was weighing similarly limited air strikes against Syria in an effort to dislodge President Bashar al-Assad from power, .........

I am still trying to figure would why we would have helped these terrorists overthrow Syria.

It is not the Syrian army that is attacking in Iraq. It is the terrorists that we were arming thanks to Hussein Obama, Hillary, and John McCain.

Under Assad, Syria was one of the few places in the middle east where Christians were protected. Yeah, Assad may be a bad guy but Obama and company are supporting and arming something so much worse.

I agree. No telling who the opposition is in Syria. They are probably all related in some way to ISIS if not ISIS themselves. IMHO if we do anything in Syria it should be to defeat ISIS.

In Egypt thank God the Egyptian army was able to expel the Muslim Brotherhood. In Libya that is one fine mess. Obama played a major role in geting rid of Ghadafi(sp) and then split leaving everything in Turmoil.

Despite all these (sufferings), I doubt Obama will see America as a global force for good.

This is exactly what happened. We were supporting terrorists in Libya and Syria.

Gaddafi wasn’t a threat to anyone. He opened his weapons arsenal to inspections. He had no WMDs. Libya was one of the most prosperous and stable governments in the region until Obama decided to back the muslim brotherhood and overthrow Gaddafi.

We were back-dooring arms to terrorists in Libya and into Syria. The arms being used to slaughter Christians and other innocent people in Iraq and Syria are arms given to the terrorists by Obama.
