Full title: Comcast Spends $110k On Award Dinner For FCC Commissioner, Doesnt See Why Anyone Thinks Thats A Problem
Comcast really wants to buy Time Warner Cable. Really really. And they have no shortage of ways, both subtle and obvious, to try to push the odds farther in their favor. Targeted philanthropy and sponsorships are definitely a part of that, and Comcast is usually happy to take the credit. So while spending six figures to sponsor an event honoring a sitting FCC commissioner who gets to make decisions about things like media mergers might seem a little out of bounds to the likes of you and me, Comcast is shocked, shocked that we would think they could possibly have an ulterior motive.
Politico reports that Comcast and Time Warner Cable have together contributed $132,000 ($110k from Comcast, $22k from TWC) this year to sponsor the Walter Kaitz Foundations annual dinner in September. The companies, along with others in the industry, have a long relationship with the Kaitz Foundation, which promotes diversity in the cable industry. But this years honoree is FCC commissioner Mignon Clyburn, so the timing has raised more than a few eyebrows.
Carrie Levine, research director for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, wrote in a blog post that the timing is curious. Levine added, Theyre honoring an FCC commissioner at the exact same time theyre trying to get approval for a merger. And that doesnt look so good.
No, Comcast, it does not look good. In fact, it looks even worse than the event Comcast tried to throw at the home of an anti-municipal broadband state senator in Kansas last month.

I HATE comcast. Unfortunately in my neighborhood a dish won’t work. I can’t unplug the TV because my husband likes the golf channel. UGH!
It makes me so proud to contribute $180 @ month to this monopoly so they can afford to ingratiate themselves with their regulators. //sarcasm
Pay to play.
I just call it Fascism.
Mignon Clyburn, if she had any integrity, would decline.
What’s Net Nuetrality anyway.
And don’t think that’s not in play here as well.
The best government money can buy.
They’re all whores.
Crony Facism! in fact
We told Comcast to cancel our cable and we’d keep the internet in the middle of July. We told the guy to cancel the cable at the end of the billing cycle which was July 27th. On that day I turned in all the remotes and boxes. Guess what. The cable hadn’t been stopped and I got a bill for the month of August. I wrote them a letter. No response. Today we called them and were told the cable was cancelled but “billing” wasn’t notified. They’ll do anything they can to keep you from cancelling. I’m now searching for an internet provider.
These damned crooks have bought way too many politicians and damn to hell the politicians who took their money.
“Information” is now controlled by about six people. And all of them are pro state.
!...the Kaitz Foundation, which promotes diversity in the cable industry...!
There’s the corruption that sticks out in this article.
Legally coerced tax-deductible bribes from internet users to the race pimps.
And it flies right over the author’s head...
Of course none of the media outlets have any interest in reporting this blatant bribery. Either they are already owned by Comcast (NBC and affiliates) or they wouldn’t mind being bought for big $ someday.
Representative Jim Clyburn is that nasty black racist hack and House Assistant Democratic Leader
Mignon is his useless daughter
Slouching towards a banana republic.
I’d say you’re pretty smart.
Have to bribe the government to do business in this banana republic. Those Central Americans feel right at home.
Why does he enjoy watching Obama?
That's one heck of a masochistic streak…
What you do is start calling from your accounting division
, inform them that the monies cannot be paid as the service has been canceled (and that you have confirmation of this, that processing the invalid bill will cost them (be sure to provide a receipt; remember that your time and energy are worth money, go for a $500 processing fee), and that continuance of billing will be forwarded to your legal division
.
