GOP sends message: Clear the way for Cassidy (LA)

SHREVEPORT, La - Can Rob Maness take a hint? Establishment Republicans would like the outsider candidate to get out of the way so that Bill Cassidy can take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu one on one in November. That message was sent again on Monday in Shreveport.

"I thank you for the endorsement!" Bill Cassidy bellowed to a crowd of Caddo Republicans at a downtown cafe.

The Caddo Parish Republican Executive Committee announced its backing of Cassidy just weeks after the whole state party did the same thing. But why turn their backs on fellow Republican Maness?

"The Democrats are marshaling every possible resource to support Mary Landrieu. And the Republicans and all those who want to see Mary Landrieu defeated simply must do the same," said Louis Avallone, chairman of the Caddo Parish Republicans.

Then there are the polls. If Maness is even mentioned, he remains stuck in single digits. That's despite endorsements from grass roots TEA party groups and Sarah Palin.

"Maness in the race would just be delaying the inevitable," says KTBS 3 Political Analyst Trey Gibson, explaining that if Maness does formally enter the race next week during qualifying, he'll likely only send the race to a runoff between Landrieu and Cassidy. And Maness may wound Cassidy in the process.

"For Maness to even have a chance he's got to spend time attacking Cassidy," Gibson says.

But Cassidy says he's not worried.

"We'll win in November or we'll win in December. Either way I trust our voters," Cassidy said.

But Maness shows no indication of giving up.

"The people get to decide who earns the opportunity to represent them. Not party leaders," Maness said in part in a statement to KTBS.

Ahh, the old threat: "buddy, do what we say or you're through for life!! (of course we'll work to destroy you anyway once you submit to us but we're not going to say THAT publicly!)"

The arrogance of these people!

I agree. Far better to have Landrieu win another 6 years than to finally beat her. This same tactic worked so well in DE and NV and AK. Why go for the sure win when you can hand the seat right back to the Democrats. Makes complete sense.

The GOPe is so corrupt, who do they think they are. I got an idea for you creeps, how about letting the people decide and then going all out for the winner. Instead you make us hate you and we will stay home. I’m beginning to think they want to lose.

Louisiana has a runoff. I’m tired of the GOP Senators choosing who they’d like to work with, like some landed aristocracy.

They never shove a moderate out of a race when a conservative is ahead!

staying home is a cop out

There will be two viable candidates. Vote foro one but not the Democrat. Don’t declare your self to be irrelevant

Almost every Cassidy voter would vote for Maness but they convince each other that only Cassidy can win. The purpose of the primary is to vote for who you want. The general is when you settle.

It is indeed surprising to me how many on good old FR ascribe to this crazy idea.

Personally I want Landrieu OUT. I want Harry Reid OUT. If that means GOPe control of the Senate then so be it. The idea that "teaching the Republicans a lesson" trumps control of the Senate for the last 2 years of the Obama Reign is simply naive. I am willing to fight that fight another day. A step at a time.

This fight will not be won in a single election cycle. We need a 2010 type election in the Senate in 2014 and we have a chance at achieving that goal. We need to eliminate Dem control of the Senate. Keep your eye on that target.

If the story is correct and Maness can only poll under 10% then where is any evidence of what you claim?

It’s amazing how many people still think this is a Republican website, isn’t it?

Yeah, we need to remember that it’s better to pass on the conservatives and back moderates in order to have a chance to beat the Dims, just as we did with McCain/Romney for president, and with George Allen, Connie Mack IV, Pete Hoekstra, Denny Rehberg, Heather Wilson, Rick Berg, and Tommy Thompson. That tactic worked out well in those cases, didn’t it?

Oh, they all lost to the Dims?

Yessssss.....

“Sending a message” worked SO well as a “tactic” in North Carolina that Lindsay Graham will never, ever work with the Dems again...

Oh, wait....

From not a single voter saying they’re voting for him for who he is and instead because he can win.

Yeah, I’ve been hearing crap like that from people like you for years. It didn’t get any better when the republicans had both houses, so no, it doesn’t matter to anyone but the political consultants, staffers and the campaign staff. Sorry, I’m not buying it anymore.
