it sounded like excessive force and God knows that is happened a lot these days. However, I was not and am not sure...glad actually that it looks like now it probably was used to save his life. I am wondering, why not stay in the patrol car with a line of fire, and call for back up?

The thug assaulted a duly appointed LEO in the performance of his duties...

The police officer has absolutely no obligation to remain in his patrol car while a thug who just finished assaulting him attempts to escape.

I suppose you’re of the opinion the LEO should have “de-escalated” and cowered in his car?

Screw that!

That thug earned what he got...
