To be fair, going by another thread, these men should have retained their privacy and private communications with anyone other than their government should be conducted via the Red Cross. This sort of internet human trophy display is unlawful and shameful.

If they are indeed Russian soldiers ordered to invade Ukraine, whatever laws were broken were broken by their government and it is their government that must answer for it, not these soldiers.

Ordinarily, the issue of privacy would be compelling. For several reasons, publishing their images serves an important purpose. Putin has been denying for the past 6 months his direct involvement in the invasion of Ukraine, despite all evidence to the contrary. Inevitably, his apologists, including those who have found such a welcoming home on FR say, “what evidence do you have?” Photographs, and social media corroboration serve to reveal the truth of what is going on. This is even more important, given that many in the west, including those in the media, continue to call this a rebellion without apparently realizing that a rebellion is a conflict consisting of combatants of the same nation. Here, 90% or more of those fighting against Ukraine are Russian citizens. Among such citizens are ordinary conscripts serving in the regular Russian army. Thus, this is an actual invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Obviously, there are some who would still deny Putin is behind this invasion, even if he road into Ukraine shirtless and straddling a tank barrel.

Ordinary conscripts are not responsible for their government’s behavior. But their government is denying their very existence and lying to their families about there whereabouts. For that, their government, the Russian government is responsible. The photographs are not humiliating or degrading, which would violate the Geneva convention. At least their families know that they are alive.

Well, I'm confused. Should we "un-friend" or "friend" them?

I agree that the Russian behavior in this matter is execrable.
Still, it is not right to make this display and the ends in view could easily have been achieved by proper communications through legitimate channels.
There is nothing preventing the Ukrainian government from informing their families through the Red Cross, of making a complaint to the UN, NATO and all interested governments, and issuing press releases correctly identifying the prisoners. This could include ID type pictures of the men posed with dignity.

I think the primary purpose was to put the lie to the claim that Russia has not invaded Ukraine. As to the question of privacy, the soldiers in the photos do not look pleased at having been captured, but do not appear mistreated. The photos themselves are not mocking or humiliating, something that would violate the Geneva convention. Having seen enough videos of Ukrainian troops captured, tortured and interrogated by Russian soldiers and journalists, these photos do not appear to cross the line. Perhaps the barbaric behavior of Lifenews journalists insulting and mistreating Ukrainian soldiers has colored my perception.

After yesterday’s parade in Donets, few mugshots ain’t bad. Should they be brought to Kyiv Maidan, with eggs thrown at them? Maybe Lavrov will change his mind about calling such practice disgraceful.

wetphoenix, you’ve been asking for proofs. Russians talking about fighting in Ukraine, confirmations of dead Russians, Russians in top leadership positions of DNR, photos of Russian equipment, claims that SBU hold Russians - none of it is enough. But photos and names- that’s too much

Let their pics be published in their hometowns. Embarrass their Tarzan-wannabee leader and cut him down a notch. We need a groundswell of resistence. The Russian people seem to enjoy being lied to.

Not only that. Wanted to know if you’ve been exposed to the language of the “brother nation” your country is currently fighting, if you’d monitor the news sites on the other side, or just following Kiselev.

In an age of smartphone GPS — and Russian IPhone-4S have combined GLONASS and GPS capability — there is very little room for the diplomatic excuse of “getting lost.”

See:

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/20/iphone-4s-supports-glonass-satellite-system-much-to-the-delight/

“Russian site iPhones.ru recently noticed that the 4S’ spec page lists support for both assisted GPS and GLONASS — the Kremlin’s global navigation satellite system and acronym for GLObalnaya NAvigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema.”

This is the 21st century equivalent of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment being involved in the capture of a squad of Russian airborne pathfinders in a vehicle on the wrong side of the Inter-German Border after a Russian military build up.

Say hello to an unambiguous “War Warning” for the coming Russian invasion of Ukraine.

They have video of interviews with the soldiers, they said they were sent by Moscow. They said they were lied to and its not like it was on television.
