BEIRUT -- The dramatic arrival of Da'ish (ISIS) on the stage of Iraq has shocked many in the West. Many have been perplexed -- and horrified -- by its violence and its evident magnetism for Sunni youth. But more than this, they find Saudi Arabia's ambivalence in the face of this manifestation both troubling and inexplicable, wondering, "Don't the Saudis understand that ISIS threatens them, too?"
It appears -- even now -- that Saudi Arabia's ruling elite is divided. Some applaud that ISIS is fighting Iranian Shiite "fire" with Sunni "fire"; that a new Sunni state is taking shape at the very heart of what they regard as a historical Sunni patrimony; and they are drawn by Da'ish's strict Salafist ideology.
Other Saudis are more fearful, and recall the history of the revolt against Abd-al Aziz by the Wahhabist Ikhwan (Disclaimer: this Ikhwan has nothing to do with the Muslim Brotherhood Ikhwan -- please note, all further references hereafter are to the Wahhabist Ikhwan, and not to the Muslim Brotherhood Ikhwan), but which nearly imploded Wahhabism and the al-Saud in the late 1920s.
Many Saudis are deeply disturbed by the radical doctrines of Da'ish (ISIS) -- and are beginning to question some aspects of Saudi Arabia's direction and discourse.

Irk-wan of the 20s and the roots of the Muslim Brotherhood did share some ancestry from what I read.
Thanks.

In a way i can’t understand why even some wahabi saudis would support IS which follows a strict salafi doctrine. They’re all sunnis but salafis regard wahabis as ‘impure believers’.
Thank you for this, regardless of the source publication.
It took me a few minutes to read it, not being familiar with many of the names and ideas.
But well worth the time.
I understand carpet bombing.
I usually post ‘barf’ or ‘lol’ threads from HuffPo. This one, however, was informative.
Traditional leftists see the threat from Islam. The ‘enemy of my enemy’ new left crowd doesn’t.
Yo. An enemy divided.
As far as I can tell, Muslims regard other Muslims as impure believers AT BEST.
And that's among their OWN brand of Islam.
Devotees of other brands of Islam are unbelievers fit only to be killed.
And we won't even mention what they think of non-Muslims.
Geez, what a bunch of lunatics. Lighten up, azzholes. (Not bloody likely...)
You don’t need to understand ISIS, you only have to understand the tactical use of the M4.
A well-aimed J-DAM which blows the Kaaba to smithereens will have strategic value, too.
If there’s nothing left for the muzzie arselifters to pray towards, then what?
There’s not really that much you need to understand. All islamic sects are evil and violent and should be totally destroyed.
That concludes our lesson for today. Tomorrow we’ll cover the erotic mating habits of a tse-tse fly.
