With a prominent grocery workers union back in support, the California Assembly voted on Thursday to impose a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags.
Just days after the measure could not muster the 41 votes needing to pass, falling short at 38, it passed on a 44-29 vote. Seven Democrats who withheld votes on the previous attempt pivoted to vote aye.
Lawmakers turned back Senate Bill 270 on Monday as the United Food and Commercial Workers Union withdrew crucial labor backing for the sweeping prohibition. Central to the unions reversal was a provision allowing grocery stores to offer paper or reusable bags for a minimum 10-cent fee.

And those cloth/paper reusable bags have been proven to harbor germs. So if you have to use the electricity AND water to wash them and provided they don’t fall apart when you do, doesn’t that defeat the purpose?
Mu-ha-ha-ha, mu-ha-ha-ha! (Twirls handlebar mustachio)
Yes, of course it does.
They created a problem, and now are resolving the problem they created. It’s S.O.P. for the liberals, the Democrats, and as usual are forcing more money to exchange hands by forcing us to buy products to carry our groceries home.
This always means some Liberal, some Democrat is on the receiving end of that forced expenditure. Another, or plural liberals, Democrats will be making money off this law somehow, some way.
One good thing that come from the plastic bag ban...
There will be less cases of ‘trigger finger’ that comes from carrying multiple bags of groceries on each finger.
They hold a T-Shirt plastic bag from the supermarket to use for trash.
Found them at Home Depot.
They save money, keep the trash out of sight and put the used bags to good use.
We haven't bought a kitchen size garbage bag in 20 years.
Liberals just cannot be happy, even with their own knee-jerk forced changes....
It was the same liberal idiots who pushed TO the plastic bags...
We use and reuse plastic bags all the time - likely fare more than we would use paper bags (if they were still available).
Poo-poo wipes and diapers for babies. Handy to have a supply of used plastic bags around. Serves as a glove inverted on the hand to grab yucky stuff.
Someone has to pay the bills for out of control government.
I’m in cal where the gov and the legislature are determined to save the planet even if their actions don’t make any sense.
Kill unborn babies? — SURE THING!

My response is always the same. Either bag my purchases, or go put it back on the shelves. Please call the manager to make that decision.
Even in the People’s Republic of Santa Monica, they bagged the purchase rather than putting it back on the shelf. One business tried to just charge me for the bags anyway, and I simply challenged the charge on my credit card, and the bank asked ‘Did you approve it?’ I replied no, filled out the affidavit, and lo and behold, the charge was taken off my bill.
Do not accept this. Any business owner who says ‘this is the law, I’m just following the law’, reply ‘It is your duty to challenge laws that cost you money. Either put my purchase in a free bag, or eat the cost of putting it back on the shelf.’
Biggest challenge came from a Target in Pasadena, the manager refused to bag the items for free, but also wasn’t really interested in the whole putting it back on the shelf idea either. I turned towards the people behind me in line, and asked ‘Who here wants to pay for bags that you would get free in any other Target without this stupid law?’ The manager bagged my purchase himself, and then continued bagging for the rest of the line.
Yes, I’m a anal person for doing this. Yes, I caused a disturbance and knowingly shopped at places that charged for bagging. Yes, I could have gone to another business, skipped the stink, and gone about my life. But I didn’t. I’m too old to give a rat’s anus what others think of what I do and say. I refuse to succumb to idiot laws which do absolutely nothing to fix the issues they claim they are written for.
Know why? Every single EBT food stamp purchase is immune to this law, and all the other laws written about it. You can’t charge an EBT person for a bag, it’s against federal law. Now who’s the most likely person to buy something and just toss the bag on the street?
This is why I fight this law.
Bravo!
I never use bags when grocery shopping. I first buy a case of beer. Then I place the box of cigars on top the the case of beer. The potato chips go on top of the cigars, followed by a box of fudge for the ladies. It’s all carried very easily to the gas guzzling truck.
If the humans are collateral damage so be it.
The well being of The Great Mother Gaia is more important than people.
