Portman urged to move step closer to presidential run

Ohio Sen. Rob Portman is being urged to form a presidential exploratory committee as the first step in running for the White House in 2016, but the Ohio Republican will not make any decisions until after the November elections.

An exploratory committee would allow Portman to raise money to pay for travel and other expenses to states such as New Hampshire and Iowa which will be holding the first presidential contests of 2016.

Although Portman and his aides say he is currently focused on running for re-election in 2016, the first-term senator has long had ambitions for national office.

Portman campaigned Tuesday in New Hampshire on behalf of Republican Scott Brown, who is challenging Sen. Jean Shaheen, D-N.H. But Portman also made a separate appearance earlier in the day in Manchester, N.H., fueling intense speculation that he plans to run for president.

Although a source close to Portman stressed that the Ohio Republican has not officially decided to run for the White House or even form an exploratory committee, forming an exploratory committee is the first major move made by presidential candidates in both parties.

He also is a regular on cable TV shows and is the chief fund-raiser for the National Republican Senatorial Committee. If Republicans seize control of the Senate in November, Portman will receive much of the credit because of the millions of dollars he has raised on behalf of GOP candidates.

Yes, but I’d love to have him split the establishment primary vote.

Jeb, Mitt, Robb will make it easier for ONE conservative candidate to beat. But, knowing conservatives, we’ll have 11 of them in the race.

If only conservatives could settle ahead of time on just one candidate.

He’s pro-fag marriage.

He can take his degenerate views and go choke to death.

Hopefully we will have a Cruz/West ticket running against a a Warren/Grayson one. Can anyone think of a more psychotic pair than Warren and Grayson?

From what little I know about Portman, my thinking is he has no enemies in GOP. He gets along with establishment types and does not offend conservatives like Romney or Jeb Bush can. I have also not seen much charisma and fire in the belly emanating from him, but like I said, I have not seen much of him.

Portman hasn’t got the personality either. Plus he is pro-gay marriage.

If the POS 0bama proved anything, then he proves the prerequisite for being POTUS is a few terms as a state governor. An executive familiar with naming heads of agencies and then managing the results. Portman? No.

Dullsville! Bet he’ll put us all to sleep in a debate where he would agree with the democrat and criticize the Tea party

Ryan filled in for hannity today. They had prepped callers who made statements that set up Ryan to talk up Portman and talk down repealing obamacare. Sure hope most republicans are smarter than democrats and see through the lies. I’m so over the Republican Party. We need either a third party or Jesus to come back real soon.

A Portman run for the presidency would be as exciting as a Bob Dole run for the presidency.

Maybe even less exciting.

Probably, unless he’s trusting in grace.

That aside, I’m glad to see him splitting the establishment vote.

We need a governor who know how to manage a budget and is held accountable for a large budget.

Senators tend to have god complexes and turn out to be wacky executives.

If it is someone from Ohio, I'd much rather have Kasich than Portman. There was a time where being a U.S. senator virtually eliminated you from becoming president - we need to go back to those times.
