Seventy-five UNDOF peacekeepers in the Golan Heights fled Syrian territory for the Israeli-controlled Golan on Saturday after their positions were attacked by rebel forces.

An Israeli military spokesman confirmed that a number of UN peacekeepers entered Israel. He spoke on condition of anonymity. Channel 2 said 75 UN troops had crossed the borders, after two UN positions on the Syrian side of the border were targeted by al-Nusra rebel forces.

Earlier in the day, the Philippine defense chief said that Filipino peacekeepers in the Golan Heights were attacked by Syrian rebels, who are also holding dozens of Fijian troops hostage.

Clashes continued in the area through Saturday.

Not exactly.

“Philippine President Benigno Aquino III ordered the troops in the two encampments not to surrender and gunbattles erupted in the area. The Philippine soldiers managed to hold their ground and fight back the attempts to take their positions. On Saturday an Irish UN force arrived at Breiqa and evacuated the Philippine force stationed there into Israeli territory.”

But the UN is always bashing Israel as the bad guy. Shouldn’t they be fleeing Israel into a safe haven in some surrounding Islamic state? How can this happen?

If Israel lifted a finger to help the poor dumb bastards, the UN would create a commission to condemn Israel for breaking the (nonexistent) ceasefire with Hizbollah-occupied Lebanon, after complaining that Israel had responded with disproportionate force.

So muslims are attacking, and they flee to Israel for safety. Hmm.... Almost makes you wonder how the left can blame Israel for this.

Because they are Philippine troops and the Philippines is friendly to Israel. There are a good number of Filipino guest workers in Israel.

Well nobody really expected any UN “troops” to actually stand and fight in the first place.

Those blue helmets don’t exactly strike fear into the hearts of terrorists.

They aren’t really there to fight. They are there to occupy a buffer zone between the antagonists reducing the possibility of inadvertent fighting, and to be observers that can testify about who shot at who. Their presence also somewhat complicates planning for making an aggressive move, as they will have to be bypassed.
They are very lightly armed. In this case it is a bit unusual in that the Filipinos and the Irish defended their positions and shot back.

They might not have been issued ammo. After all, they were up against the Religion of Peace.

#1 is Pinay

#2 in from the U.K.
