Still was going to fast and probably should have been more aware of the surroundings. The word is ANTICIPATION.

That said - Pedestrians do often times do stupid things and blame the cyclist. I have had groups of pedestrians just step out in front of me. I don’t ride that fast (11-14 mph average)but it does happen and I have to watch for them.

The fact that the rider hung around after the accident says some good things about him/her. I saw a guy nail an elderly woman on the bike path in the Hong Kong New Territories. It was actually the old woman’s fault for not looking and stepping out into the bike lane in front of a blind curve. She didn’t want to go a few feet farther down to the cross walk area. The racer guy picked up his bike and just rode away when other elderly people started cursing at him in Chinese. I stopped and administered 1st aide. The old woman was unconscious and had broken bones. I had the HK cops interrogate me for two hours because they would not believe I was not the rider that hit the old woman for my trouble.

BTW, the presence of brake handles does not mean the bike was not a fixed gear track bike. Many “fixies” have the handles for comfort reasons so the rider does not have to be in the drops all the time.

From the bike pics it shows he has front and rear brakes with cables sticking out

Thanks for the insight. It seems that perhaps Nanny Bloomberg could have better spent his time on this issue rather than 32 oz. soda.

Many bicyclists demand the rights and privileges of both automobiles and pedestrians but accept the responsibilities of neither.
