I have lived in Turkey and it was Muslim controlled then, too. They claim not to be but they always have been.

When and where? I actually spend a great deal of time in Cas area a couple hours drive from the Syrian border and rarely seen any Islamists there. Before all the crap started in Syria I seriously planned to retire there.

“Allows”==”Mandates”

Seriously, with a straight face, these scoundrels would approach a group of Christians, threaten them with death unless they converted to Islam, then say they “allowed” them to convert to Islam if they chose.

There are certainly pockets of non-muslims but the country follows islam to a great extent. Always has.

” I actually spend a great deal of time in Cas area a couple hours drive from the Syrian border and rarely seen any Islamists there. Before all the crap started in Syria I seriously planned to retire there.”

I lived for a few years in Turkey. Mostly in Bahcelievler, Ankara... but also spent several months in Fenerbahce, Istanbul...this was during the 80s. While most of the people that I associated with were normal folks, there was an undercurrent of Islamism with the people living in the gecekondu districts that were springing up in both cities as the result of people migrating from “the east”.

My wife and I were thinking for a long time about retiring there as well (Bodrum), but since the AKP came into power....no way in the world.

Yes. Turkey is slipping away, becoming nuttier by the minute.

The religion tends to enslave the government. The military in Turkey doesn’t want to share power with a bunch of “meddlesome priests”.

It probably doesn’t want but priests aren’t asking and the military does nothing about it.
