The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General and head of UNMIL, Ms Karin Landgren, has confirmed here that an international staff of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has tested positive of the deadly Ebola virus.

The staff member, who works for UNMIL medical team, is currently receiving treatment. According to a press statement issued in Monrovia on Wednesday, SRSG Ms. Karin Landgren said this is the second case of Ebola within the mission.

An earlier probable case resulted to the death of a staff member on 25 September 2014...

Meanwhile the Mission is extending the robust review of its own action initiated in the wake of the first probable case of Ebola virus. SRSG Landgren said UNMIL will continue to strengthen the mitigation measures that they had until late September to help the military, police, and affected areas.

Of interest, certainly to many, are "mitigations" put into effect at the "UNMIL" following the death in late September. The scope of the UNMIL, whether it directly runs a treatment facility, whether this was the death of a local or a healthcare professional, for example, is not mentioned.

As recently as two weeks ago, I seem to recall the number of doctors and nurses already counted among the dead was already over 80. Since then, some may have read of strike threats, anger over death benefits, etc. I have not read of a new tally that specific cited since, though all general tallies are qualified now by the admission that all official tallies are drastically incomplete.

I hope our military uses some common sense and takes far more precautions than the UN.

Meanwhile Obola is sending US troops to Ebolaland.

I wonder who the first US soldier will be to contract Obola?

Oh. And it seems I’m racist for using the term Obola.

not really possible to be totally protected except maybe in a biohazard level IV environment and we only have 19 beds at that level in the whole US. I doubt that they have any in Liberia.

http://www.who.int/csr/disease/ebola/situation-reports/en/ - follow October 8, 2014 Update link.

401 health care workers known infected, and 232 known dead from Ebola this year. This does not appear to include Spain.

unless Obama tries to cover it up or call the deaths road accidents

If past patterns are followed - it will be termed a work place accident

Regular grunt units in the Corps go through NBC training as part of deployments and even twenty years ago had some good equipment. The only thing to hope for is the unit(s) being deployed are the highly trained NBC units supported by well trained BLT’s in support of security. I really feel sorry for the guys and gals in the field, that gear they will need to wear is freaking miserable in the coolest of conditions not to mention getting in and out of that gear is a very long exercise, very messy and very burdensome to keep maintained.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...
