Larry Pressler's wife, Harriet, drives him to all of his campaign events. He has a single full-time paid staffer running his campaign. A bank loan accounts for half of the money he's spent on his race so far.
So yes, it was surprising to Larry Pressler when he woke up Wednesday to find himself within striking distance of winning the race for South Dakota's junior seat in the US Senate. A SurveyUSA poll released that day showed Pressler, an Independent, would get 32% of the vote in a race that pits him against former South Dakota Gov. Mike Rounds, a Republican, and Democrat Rick Weiland, a former aide to Sen. Tom Daschle.
The SurveyUSA poll found Pressler just 3 points behind Rounds, who has been the presumptive winner of the race since incumbent Sen. Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) announced his retirement. Johnson's seat has been viewed as a near-certain pickup for Republicans.
In the poll of likely voters, 28% said they planned to vote for Weiland. But if he were to drop out, according to the poll, Pressler would open up a 15-point lead against Rounds, who has been dragged down by allegations of mishandling a major program when he was governor. Without Pressler in the race, meanwhile, Rounds would still maintain a slight edge over Weiland.
Pressler was first elected to Congress in 1975 as a Republican, becoming the first Vietnam War veteran to serve in Congress. He spent two terms in the House of Representatives before he was elected to the Senate, where he spent 18 years. Now, he is trying to win back the seat he lost to Johnson.

Pressler is more liberal than the Dem candidate and will caucus with the Dems if he wins. If we lose this seat..... Holy crap!
Pressler is a moron. His most noteworthy achievement was accidentally walking into a closet during a Senate committee hearing and staying there for several minutes before coming back out because he didn’t want anyone around to know he’d done something so stupid. When he walked out, everyone in the room just stared at him.
Daschle once said of Pressler that a senate seat is a terrible thing to waste: a riff off of a mind being a terrible thing to waste.

Inconsistent polling here.
Survey USA has Rounds at 35%, Pressler at 32% (way more than any other poll shows for Pressler) and the rat Weiland at 28%.
Yougov has Rounds at 42%, the rat at 27% and Pressler at just 12%.
Nielson Brothers has Rounds at 39%, the rat at 26% and Pressler at 24%.
I’d say good thing no one made Weiland drop out for Pressler. Weiland (a Dasshole liberal who I would be very loathe to say is to Pressler’s right) is not a desultory candidate like the rat Senate nominee in KS and rat gubernatorial nominee in AK.
Pressler BTW refuses to confirm or deny that he walked into a closet by mistake and hid there, meaning he did.
Its Rounds’ fault. He has literally done zero campaigning. Pulling a Tommy Thompson and thinks it will just fall into his lap

Larry Pressler was a Rhodes Scholar, Harvard Law school, Combat officer in Vietnam, member of both the house and Senate, college professor and author. He is, I admit, a bit quirky. In the Abscam affair in the 70’s he was the only member of congress who turned down the bribe offer and reported it to the FBI.

Given your championship - as an elected official in MS - of liberal Sinator Thad the Cad, his mass-scale voting fraud and other sleazy escapades, and attacking good citizens speaking up against him, I’m shocked, shocked, you’d defend the MORONIC Larry Pressler, who is now a leftist ZeroBot Democrat... NOT.

I’m sure your constituents would love to know who and what you support and the methods by which they conduct themselves. I thought I read that Rounds has other problems. Something he did in the past? Or is that a smear campaign?
He is vaguely tied to a scandal involving other officials, but all that its really come to is headlines in left wing papers saying “it MIGHT ensnare Rounds”. Nothing remotely concrete I don’t think.
