Obama vs. Voter ID [It's evolved since June 2014]

June 9, 2014: For years, President Obama and black civil rights leaders have been telling the nation that voter ID laws are being pushed by racist Republicans who want to disenfranchise blacks. "The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act was passed in to law nearly five decades ago," Mr. Obama told a conference hosted by Al Sharpton earlier this year. Dismissing the notion that voter ID laws could have anything to do with ballot integrity, the president said that "the real voter fraud is people trying to deny our rights by making voting harder in the first place."

Mr. Obama has, however, been able to convince some in the GOP that opposing voter ID laws is a good way for Republicans to win over black voters. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul said last month that "it's wrong for Republicans to go too crazy" on voter ID "because it's offending people." He means black people. Maybe, like Mr. Obama, the senator ought to familiarize himself with these polls.

BUT because Democrats are bleeding support.... "The White House has undertaken a concerted effort to drive minority voters to the polls"

So, Obama goes back on Sharpton's show and tells his audience: Oct 21, 2014: The Hill: Obama: Apathy, not Voter ID, keeps minorities from polls

Controversial voter identification laws are not the primary reason minority voters are failing to cast their ballots, President Obama said in a radio interview airing Tuesday.

"Most of these laws are not preventing the overwhelming majority of folks who don't vote from voting," Obama said during an interview with Rev. Al Sharpton. "Most people do have an ID. Most people do have a driver's license. Most people can get to the polls. It may not be as convenient, it may be a little more difficult."

The Justice Department has challenged new voter identification laws in Texas and North Carolina. Those pieces of legislation passed shortly after the Supreme Court struck down key provisions of the Voting Rights Act, which had required pre-approval of state voting law changes by the federal government.

The administration has argued that the laws are politically motivated and intended to prevent poor and minority voters — who tend to vote Democratic — from casting their ballots. Under this theory, those voters they are less likely to have identification and the costs associated with getting such a card are likely to hurt them more than more affluent sections of the public. Republicans have said the efforts are intended to prevent voter fraud.

Over the weekend, the Supreme Court decided to uphold Texas's new voter ID law. Attorney General Holder has said the government will also challenge new voting laws in Ohio and Wisconsin.

But according to Obama, apathy is the prime factor that mutes minority voices.

"The bottom line is, if less than half of our folks vote, these laws aren't preventing the other half from not voting," Obama said. "The reason we don't vote is because people have been fed this notion that somehow it's not going to make a difference. And it makes a huge difference."

The president added that if Democrats have high turnout from their base, they could prevail in tossup states crucial to holding Senate control.

"If we have high turnout in North Carolina then we will win. If we have high turnout in Georgia, we will win. If we have high turnout in Colorado, we will win. So, across the board, it is important for us to take responsibility and not give away our power," Obama said.

------------

And Obama tells Sharpton, he understands that vulnerable Democrat candidates "need to do whatever it takes" and that "I'll be responsible for making sure our voters turn out." ".........Obama went on to say that his feelings weren’t hurt by Democrats who were reluctant to campaign with him.

“These are folks who are strong allies and supporters of me, and I tell them, I said, ‘You know what, you do what you need to do to win. I will be responsible for making sure our voters turn out.’ ” .....

No he was telling the truth. He just left off the fact that THEY were the ones threatening everyone else's right to vote by fraud!

That was Obama’s old pitch. His new pitch is in my comment below the June 9, 2014 posted article.

All I can say is there has to be a lot of cheating going on for Democrats to resist this so strongly. I don’t believe it because they think their constituents are too stupid to get or have an ID.

This is much like Walker freeing his state’s teachers from the unions. The unions fought to the bitter end and in the end it is apparent why. They were corrupt to the core and a third of the teachers fled the union when they had a choice.

It may be a mistake to assume they want a job. And if that’s the case they don’t care about the illegals. All they may care about is the EBT card, public housing and a free phone.

We’ve had a voter ID law in Michigan since 1996 and we’ve never been sued by the Justice Department. But then again Michigan has gone Democratic in the Presidential elections since 1992, so obviously the Voter ID law isn’t stopping Democrats from voting here.

I wouldn’t have a problem if they just got rid of an ID being required for picking up narcotic drugs at the drug store, requiring an ID for getting a hunting license, and no ID for getting married. All or nothing deal.

Yes, but in MI you can sign an affidavit (without an ID) and still cast your vote.

"Our folks"

I don't think he's referring to typical White people.

If the GOP were serious it would field candidates in every urban race. Most are winnable.

It is threatened by fraud, every illegal vote disenfranchises a legal voter.

The president added that if Democrats have high turnout from their base, they could prevail in tossup states crucial to holding Senate control.

Not if the turnout for republicans is equally or better than democrats. Remember, independents significantly voted more republican than democrat last election and its been two more years of having to eat the Obama/Democrat shit sandwich to influence even more independents to vote republican.
