Former CIA Director David Petraeus said in a new interview that the rise of the Islamic State was well known among people monitoring the situation within the U.S. government, and that it was able to flourish amid the chaos of the civil war in Syria.
ISIS in a sense is the evolution of an organization that we did defeat, Al Qaeda in Iraq, Petraeus told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in an interview published Monday. Some of the very hard work we did to help re-establish the fabric of Iraqi society to bring the Sunni Arabs back into Iraqi society and give them an incentive to support the new Iraq rather than to oppose it was undone. It created fertile ground once again for the planting of the seeds of extremism and alienated the Sunni Arab component of Iraqi society.

Petraeus is a liar. He lied and agreed that Benghazi was a video instead of an ISIS attack. He is a filthy liar and I reject his statement on anything. He was also immoral to the core as a married man. He was a Obola whore and a hillary whore. Leave already.
Obama is responsible for the reemergence of Al-Qaida in a new form, ISIS or as he refers to it as ISIL.
So I guess the Hillary Camp is buttering Petreaus’ bread these days. It’s understandable he would have a score to settle with the House of O, after that career hatchet job they performed on him in 2012. Poor Mrs. Petraeus was nationally humiliated. I suppose that flirtatous brunette (and her sister) is still hosting champagne parties and harvesting military info that can be later used for extortion.
Agree with your assessment.
It seems that we have very few men of honor in leadership anymore.
Besides, how long are we going to deceive ourselves with statements like:
“It created fertile ground once again for the planting of the seeds of extremism and alienated the Sunni Arab component of Iraqi society.”
Really? They have been at each other’s throats for centuries.
As for ISIS—we started them and we armed them.
David Petraeus can go join Colin Powell in the pantheon of those I don’t listen to anymore.
Sinnis are all to blame. It is all 100% backed by Sunnis— find me a sunni that doesnt sit silent on the head choppers? Find one— let me know.
Gen. Dempsey on BBC tonight said that the purpose of airstrikes is to “buy time so Iraqi Army can be trained.”
Who the h trains an army in a war zone in the middle of a war!!??
Well duuuh, Obama wants to lose this whole ball of wax on purpose.
MORON.
What you said.
David Petraeus can go join Colin Powell in the pantheon of those I dont listen to anymore.
David...David..David....the words escape me...
Cut and run Obama is at fault.
Petreaus is correct that ISIS was spawned from alQaeda in Iraq.
That's actually a pretty interesting statement. That's about as close as a political creature such as Petraeus can get to naming names without winding up in Fort Marcy Park with an unexplained bullet to the head, and it turns out he really doesn't have to. Undone, indeed; yes, it was, and by whom?
Let us review. When 0bama took office (1) the war in Iraq was over, (2) there was a new, popularly-elected government, (3) al Qaeda in Iraq was in hiding or dead, and (4) we had combat troops sufficient to the need staged in existing bases. Six years later, (1) the war is back on, (2) the Iraqi government has denied a SOFA and managed to devolve to tribal irrelevance, (3) al Qaeda in Iraq lives again in the form of ISIS, and (4) we're scrambling to throw an inadequate number of troops into a war zone with impossible ROE and the pretense that they're going to do security at the embassy, which incidentally was just the recipient of a mortar attack.
If that is not a thoroughly damning litany of failure I cannot imagine what would make it worse short of complete abandonment of the embassy staff under fire, and we know from Benghazi just how very capable the current administration is of doing precisely that. Pray for the troops.
I don’t know about all of the other stuff you said, but he sure was dumb to have written emails to his mistress.
Sorry Davie - I lost all respect for you a long time ago. Your opinion means zilch.
We did not “start” ISIS. ISIS is composed of Zarqawi’s old group al Tawhid, which was responsible for the late 1999 Millennium plot to bomb a Jordanian hotel frequented by Americans and Israelis and also the failed attempt to bomb LAX airport. al Tawhid was a Palestinian group which entered Iraq and merged with a Kurdish radical Mullah Krekar’s group Ansar al Islam, which was composed partly of officials belonging to Saddam Hussein’s intelligence service the Mukhabarat. Krekar was based in Norway and also had a cell in Milan which funneled European recruits to Ansar and which was known for the taped discussion of the upcoming 9/11 attacks on the US that the Italians intercepted but did not translate in time.
Zarqawi rose to a leadership role in the merged groups after establishing terrorist cells during the reign of Saddam Hussein - one in Baghdad known for its decapitation of a nun prior to our invasion and also a cell in northern Iraq on the border with Iran, where work was underway to produce a toxic ricin cream intended to be used on European public rail targets, etc. The merged group was responsible for the murder of US Aid official Lawrence Foley in Jordan before the invasion of Iraq.
When they changed their name to al Qaeda in Iraq after our invasion and after the execution of Saddam Hussein, Zarqawi swore the oath of allegiance to Osama bin Laden. One of his uderlings was al Baghdaddi who later led the organization after Zarqawi bit the farm and they took up the name ISIS, I think there was another interim leader or two.
Zarqawi’s courier was captured at one point bearing an “all-is-lost” message when the organization was suffering after the Awakening and surge.
All this time more and more former Baath Party officials joined the group now called al Qaeda in Iraq, which laid relatively low until President Dingleberry announced we would withdraw.
Since then as IS / Islamic State and ISIS they appear to have begun to swell since the re-emergence of the red-headed Baath Party/Saddam Hussein henchman al Douri.
I can’t find fault with your statement. The truth is what it is.
Wow. Tough room. I would trust Patraeus’ judgment before anyone else in this administration. Its true he had a bad ending but the man knows what he’s talking about. Never seen such a tightly orchestrated hatchet job...honey trap and all.
Kurds never cut and run-
Kurd armor run to the sound of the Kobani guns.
