Motorcycle-riding Sikhs in Ontario will not be exempted from the provinces helmet law, Premier Kathleen Wynne has decided.
Manohar Singh Bal, secretary of the Canadian Sikh Association, said the group has been co-ordinating efforts on behalf of the community for almost four years to have Sikh riders exempted on religious ground.
This decision by Premier Wynne puts into question the value given to the collective views of our long-time Sikh MPPs in the Liberal Caucus,
NDP MPP Jagmeet Singh (Bramalea-Gore-Malton) said he was deeply disappointed by Premier Wynnes decision not to grant an exemption to motorcycle helmet laws for turbaned Sikhs.
In 2008, Ontario Court of Justice Judge James Blacklock of Brampton ruled against a human rights challenge to the Ontario Highway Traffic Act that had been launched by Baljinder Badesha, a devout Sikh who was fined $110 in 2005 for not wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle.

Weren’t the Sikhs our ferocious allies in Vietnam?
You know it's going to happen.
I'd like to see the helmets they put on over those things. Probably gonna look like the character, Dark Helmet, in "Spaceballs".
Yes, the US military will eventually have to conform to the laws and traditions of Punjab too.
Sikhs wear helmets, they are softer than most though...
This is a medical-health issue, not a religious one.
As long as the Govt. of Ontario is on the hook for covering any head injuries motorcycle riders may incur, they get to set the rules. Sorry, a turban is no protection in a crash.
BTW, I think in Britain they already have a turban-capable hard helmet.
A school district in WA state allows Sikhs in elementary school to wear their knives.
Sikhs don't wear their kirpans on international flights, so they are in fact not compelled to wear them if they don't want to.
Canada needs a Sikh registry to track all legal Sikhs. This database would be simple and inexpensive.
Also help tracking all the knives they carry, should one of them run amuck!
Canadian scientist will then develop an oversize helmet made in Canada from solid maplewood!
Also a registry for big hair, mullet heads, blue hairs...
A small annual fee required to cover the minimal cost of development and maintenance.
Well, if they want to live in the civilized world then perhaps they should adopt the customs of civilized people.
Such as shaving and getting haircuts.
Oh. Like Abe Lincoln...
I’d say OK, but no medical coverage for a motorcycle accident if it can be proven that a helmet would have mitigated or prevented the injuries.
What if the turban comes off on the highway and gets others killed?
Sikhs are not bad people....proof is that muzzie scum hate them LOL. But of course the laws should apply to all.
Sikhs are a constant pain to our military.
You are probably thinking of the South Koreans.
You make a good point.
None of the Founding Fathers failed to shave, but only 70 years later society had deteriorated to the point where it was acceptable for prominent men to go into public wearing beards.
