Politics 2014 Election McConnell: No Shutdowns, No Full Obamacare Repeal

Jay Newton-Small/Hazard, KY @JNSmall

8:22 AM ET

Sen. Mitch McConnell was giddy... Kentuckian... TIME’s interview ...

Notably, a full repeal of Obamacare was not on his mind...

...

... get America back to work ... Keystone XL pipeline ... medical device tax ... 40-hour work week ... individual mandate ... bipartisan majority in the Senate

... agree on with the President ... comprehensive tax reform and trade agreements

... international trade

... nuclear option? ...we’ll discuss that...

...

... immigration reform? We’re going to discuss...

What if ... executive action ... immigration? ... funding process. ... a budget ... appropriations bills.

... a government shutdown? ... you re-pass it.

... possibility of a government shutdown?

No. There is no possibility of a government shutdown. Remember me? I’m the guy that gets us out of government shutdowns. (He laughs.)

...

...

So, in 2016, what’s your top priority?

Well, it’ll be to keep the majority, of course.

Does anyone else in the Senate dare run against him for majority leader?

Is it too much to hope the new pubbie majority will put somebody besides Mitch in control of the senate? McConnell sounds sad that the Republicans won. And ditto for Boehner.

Holy Cr@p........

I only hope that Ted Cruz starts gnawing on Mitch’s leg like a bulldog/pit bull mix.

On a daily basis.

Too bad most of the elected people on both houses are too chickenshit to take on the anemic leadership. Why love to see somebody challenge him, we know damn well it’s not gonna happen. Even the house, where we have a substantial conservative caucus, couldn’t muster up a challenge for any of the leadership positions… Even when Cantor went down hard.

Right back to politics over principles.

The nation spoke with a megaphone last night. Mitch wasn’t listening.

The part of the speech was nothing like that .

He sounded downright feisty.

People will have to show up in front of the Capitol, I guess.

They need to pass bills that the voters want.
And let Obama veto them.

As much as I enjoyed the sweeping win last night, the sad reality is that the GOP is what it is. My expectations are extremely low.

The GOPe is too content to just tap on the brakes. Republicans have won and it will be two very short years until they are turned out if they don’t grab the wheel and change directions - dramatically. If you don’t throw off the millstone around the neck of the American economy, nothing will improve. Active, meddling government is America’s millstone.

TIME: So, in 2016, what’s your top priority?

MITCH: Well, it’ll be to keep the majority, of course.

The Democrats got mauled today, deservedly so. To prohibit that from happening to the GOP in 2016, it must learn the lesson from the last time Republicans held the Senate majority. This time they must not retreat, and it's our responsibility to hold them accountable. Will they fight for reform that aligns with the limited government planks of the Republican platform, or will they return to the big government cronyism and status quo favored by the permanent political class? Will they drain the swamp or decide the D.C. cesspool is really just a jacuzzi they can't wait to jump on into and shake us off?

If GOP leadership returns to business as usual, then this majority will be short lived, for We the People say, “once bitten, twice shy.”

So, establishment types, remember that you didn’t build this! This majority that swept you into power tonight is thanks to the rank and file commonsense conservative grassroots. That’s who built it. And they expect results. They deserve the best for America.
... Sarah Palin (and Majority Leader-to-be Cruz approves of this message)

What is the possibility that this loser gets hoisted out on his petard and another is voted to be the Senate Majority Leader?

These comments are such a disappointment to hear, and so soon after the election. Mitch completely fails to understand that the people do not want politics as usual, and certainly don’t want the GOP to have their top priority to be their re-election in 2016. There are real problems out there that people are having to deal with as a result of the loony left’s actions over the last six years, Obamacare being only one of them. Talk about being tone deaf!

These guys are nothing buy flotsam on the sea of politics. Not going to make any waves because they don't want to get sunk. These two are the absolute worst possible leaders of their party in both houses. Look at the reverse, in the house they have Pelousy. Say what you want, she has a program as misguided as it is. In the Senate, Weed, er Reid. Another monumental bum but at least he has a program, what the Obola says it is, nothing else, no compromise. What is the point of having a different party if the guy at the top in both houses wants to go along with Obola, but only when in charge. Unfortunately, there is no way to get rid of these two ticks.
