If CBO scored the mandate as taxes, the bill dies. … So it’s written to do that,” Gruber said, suggesting “it would not have passed” if the law “made it explicit” that healthy people would “pay in” and the sick would get money.
“Lack of transparency is a huge political advantage,” Gruber continued. “Call it the stupidity of the American voter or whatever, but basically that was really, really critical to get the thing to pass. I wish ... we could make it all transparent. But I’d rather have this law than not.”
Gruber, when reached by phone yesterday, said repeatedly, “I have no comment.”

Nevertheless, the solution isn’t to rub their nose in it. It is for those of us who recognize the folly of coercive big-government socialism to explicitly re-educate and broadcast the alternative: drastically cutting the unconstitutional $,000,000,000,000 federal government and thus promoting freedom from government and the voluntary free market economy which is freedom in action.

I agree with the content of the "perfect quote" and did a startpage.com search on it to verify it. I was unsuccessful. Politifact.com, truthorfiction.com, and snopes.com all wrote that they could not verify the authenticity of any source other than an e-mail circulating through the ether.

The “hot tar” thing is a myth. They used pine tar back then, not roofing tar/asphalt like most people nowadays think of. You don’t need to heat pine tar very much.
