RUSSIAN warships are north of Australian waters in an unprecedented show of strength to accompany Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to the G20 in Brisbane this weekend.

Australian P3 Orion surveillance aircraft have been deployed to monitor the ships, along with Anzac class frigate, HMAS Stuart.

The ships are in the Coral Sea, south of Bougainville off Australia’s east coast.

In an official statement released tonight, the Defence department said air surveillance of the Russian vessels was underway.

“Defence is monitoring Russian naval vessels that are currently transiting through international waters to the north of Australia,” the department said in a statement.

“In accordance with international law, Defence have been monitoring the Russian vessels.

“Defence regularly undertakes maritime surveillance patrols in the approaches to Australia.”

The department said that Russian naval vessels had previously been deployed in conjunction with major international summits.

A warship from Russia’s Pacific Fleet accompanied former Russian President Medvedev’s visit to San Francisco in 2010, and a Russian vessel was also was sent to the APEC meeting in Singapore in 2009.

A guided missile Cruiser, Varyag, named after the country’s Viking ancestors, the Varangian people, is leading the contingent south in international waters.

Normally it wouldn't be big deal as written in the article as SOP, but with Putin's Russia, who knows? He worries me, especially as he sees America as weak. Thanks Obambi...due to your policies no one fears us anymore. Yes, I said fear. Respect, I prefer, but fear deters.

Thank God we still have our Tridents, not that Obambi would use them. However, the bad guys don't know that for sure.

I don’t think Putin really sees the U.S. as weak or he wouldn’t be plotting for another Cold War and seeking alliances with other anti-west types. But we had better take it seriously and start considering back-tracking on some of the military cuts we’ve made or we really will be dangerously weak.

Too many lunatics and friends of lunatics spouting anti-American rhetoric to not take it VERY seriously.

He may view Obama as weak, but thankfully we still have term limits and some semblance of a balance of power. Things can turn around here much easier than they can in Russia or China or Syria or wherever.

I don’t think this particular thing is a big deal, however.

The Russsians were never 10 feet tall but they are dangerous. The big danger was the threat of a war being started over an internal situation(wag the dog). The good news is that Bush41 oversaw the USSR dismantling.

It’s great training for the Australian Defence Force and a great chance to gather intelligence as well.

It also might help the government make the case to the lightweight lefties in Australia that we need to increase funding to the military over time. They like to think that all the threats have gone away.

A guided missile Cruiser, Varyag, named after the country’s Viking ancestors, the Varangian people, is leading the contingent south in international waters. It is accompanied by a destroyer, Marshal Shaposhnikov, and one of the world’s most powerful tugs the Fotiy Krylov. A supply tanker Boris Butoma is also heading south towards Australia’s east coast as part of the dispatch.

So how often are U.S. Navy task forces forced to deploy with a tug in case one of the warships breaks down?

This probably goes back to Australia’s prime minister threatens to body-slam Russia’s Putin. Shirtfronting has consequences.

Good points.

Not sure if this is connected to the shirtfronting.
