The White House on Thursday hinted that President Obama could veto congressional legislation approving the Keystone XL pipeline as lawmakers in both the House and Senate were readying votes on the controversial construction project.
"Our dim view of these kinds of proposals has not changed, press secretary Josh Earnest said.
Earnest reiterated that the State Department was still reviewing the controversial pipeline project, and that litigation in a Nebraska court still needed to be resolved. On Wednesday, Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.), facing a tough reelection effort, requested unanimous consent to proceed on a vote approving the pipeline. With nearly a dozen Democrats supporting the measure, the Louisiana senator may have the votes to pass the bill into law.
I am glad that we will now have an up-or-down vote on the Hoeven-Landrieu bill to green light the Keystone pipeline, and I urge all senators to join me in the effort to approve this important project, Landrieu said in a statement.
House Republicans are also offering a Keystone bill offered by Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.), who is challenging Landrieu in the runoff election. Voters will head to the polls next month to decide that race.
"The House has passed legislation to expedite the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline eight times, The Senate did not consider any of the eight, Cassidy said in a statement.
I will now pass a bill identical to the bill the Senate is said to consider to push this issue forward. If the Senate also passes the bill it can go straight to the President's desk for signature, he continued.
Environmental groups have rallied against the pipeline, arguing a spill could have a disastrous environmental impact and that its construction would encourage tar sands extraction.

The GOP should not allow a vote on this in the Senate until Obama abandons his veto threat.
Good, more ammunition for conservatives to run against in 2016. Great way to show a clear distintion between the Dems and the GOP.
Oh I’m sure 0bam would sign it of the Rs would reciprocate with, oh, I don’t know, maybe amnesty.
Keystone is very popular with the electorate, even among democrats.
I wonder of the Senate ( with some democrats ) can muster 67 votes to override Obama’s veto...
Let him veto it. When gas goes up over four bucks a gallon again, let the Dems OWN that.
Can I ask a stupid question?
The Keystone pipeline has been under review, and has been studied, for over five years now? Exactly what more has to be studied to determine whether to go forward?
We won World War II in less time than our government has been deciding whether building a pipeline is a worthwhile project or not.
PERFECT!
It will be wonderful to watch the Senate OVERRIDE his veto.
Keystone may be the ONLY measure that can attract the Dem votes for an OVERRIDE.
Obama’s thinking of the future!
The ‘climate’ pimps pay big speaking fees.
I wonder if bathhouse barry has already counted noses on a potential veto threat.
On the contrary the Senate at this point can likely pass the Keystone Pipeline legislation and if Barky vetoes it they may may well have 67 votes to pass it over his veto. If that should happen his presidency is basically over.
GOP has a clear winner her. Let Bam bam veto it, then beat him, and all his rat buddies, over the head with it. Best case scenario is a bunch of rats vote with us and override the veto, sending Obola into a childish temper tantrum. Worst case scenario is an excellent campaign issue for 2016.
This could be the first veto override our petulant, narcissistic leader will experience. Need 2/3rds in both Houses. Might have them. 67 in Senate, 288 or so in House
BRING
IT
ON
This guy is clearly begging for it.
RE: The Keystone pipeline has been under review, and has been studied, for over five years now? Exactly what more has to be studied to determine whether to go forward?
Nothing really. I mean if many other pipelines have already existed and are not a danger to the environment, why not Keystone?
It’s the same as hydrofracking in New York State. Neighboring Pennsylvania has been doing it safely for years without problems creating tens of thousands of jobs in PA ( and at the NY border ). But still, Andrew Cuomo has been ordering one study after the other. It’s been going on for more than 5 years here in NY.
The point is really to appease the environmentalist wacko base. That’s all there is to it.
Farmers here in Indiana can’t ship the beans and corn.
All the rail lines are loaded with crude tankers (Warren Buffet profits).
Exactly what more has to be studied to determine whether to go forward?
++++
The same thing that they have been studying for the last 5 years:
“How will holding up approval of the Keystone Pipeline impact campaign contributions and our prospects in the next election?”
Until Obama perceives that the answer has changed he is just going to keep studying the “problem”.
