Building a “more sensitive cop” for the 21st century

In the mad rush to blame the police for most of society’s ills during the current rounds of protests and riots, advanced progressive thinkers seem to be lining up quickly in terms of finding a solution. Clearly, they assert, we have too many of the wrong sort of cops. In the fashion typical of those who see every problem as a nail and themselves as a hammer, these same problem solvers rapidly conclude that we need to hire a large number of the right sort of cops and fundamentally transform the ones we already have.

This thinking seems to be on display with the opinions of Cedric Alexander this week at CNN.

For starters, we must enhance recruitment methods, provide initial — and continual — training in specific areas of cultural sensitivity, encourage police organization transparency, and build police department-community relationships that will foster the development of trust and true collaboration.

Police departments need to work much harder to build a workforce that is diverse, in that word’s broadest definition. And a police department demographic should closely represent that of the community it serves…

Training in cultural sensitivity and critical thinking are crucial to an officer’s performance. You cannot be an effective or ethical officer if you cannot think critically—that is, being able to gather and process information to guide decision-making that directly affects behavior. This skill can mean the difference between life and death for an officer or the person with whom he or she is interacting.

Cultural sensitivity training requires an understanding of the history of the community and its members, but it also requires officers’ personal reflections, so they are aware of their biases and allegiances and how these may influence their decision-making abilities and behavior.

FTA: "the police force should “look like the community they protect and serve” conveys the thinly veiled message that if you are black or Latino, white cops can’t be trusted to act in your best interest. Imagine the howls of protest if a predominantly white community objected to the hiring of some number of black police officers."

So does this mean Blacks and Latinos can be bigoted against Whites? I thought that was impossible because of White privilege. I thought the progressives demanded that we get together, try to love one another right now. Silly me.

What good are cameras on cops! No prosecutor believes the visual evidence anyways.

What? The cop’s job is not to be sensitive. The cop may be dealing with violent, hardened criminals in his daily duties. He doesn’t know when one of 0bama’s boys will put his life in danger.

What they are really saying is that the cop should look the other way when 0bama’s boys commit crime, and that White cops should willingly and happily submit to being assaulted by 0bama’s boys in reparation for all the evils committed by Whitey.

Good rule for cops - If someone is trying to kill you, kill them first, pay no attention to the color of their skin.

We need masculine cops, not macho cops.

I want police who are more sensitive to the Constitution and the law as opposed to police who just make it up as they go along. Like, for instance, their own interpretations of gun laws.

A disturbing number of FReepers seem to be unable to discern a choke hold when they see it, either.

Cops are already “sensitive” enough...Sensitive that is, to the chaos that ensues whenever somebody like Michael Brown decides to resist arrest. What they really want are cops who for all intents and purposes, are sufficiently numbed out.

“You cannot be an effective or ethical officer if you cannot think critically—”

Not even a hint of irony in the article.

One effective way to deal with a lib/prog type who has any shred of intellectual honesty, ask them this. You're standing on a subway platform at around 2AM the train pulls in and you're standing between two cars when it stops and the doors open. In one car is a bunch of "Urban" type Black 20-somethings, who are either wearing dreadlocks, drooping pants or look like "gangstas", but otherwise seem to be behaving themselves. In the other car are older people, many Whites among them also minding their own business. Which car would they enter? Their non-verbal reactions would be quite interesting.
