It's demographics. I spent two semesters as a visiting professor in Turkey. My colleagues on the faculty were fairly cosmopolitan. They had received their advanced degrees in either the US or Europe. Yes, they were Muslim, but they weren't fanatical about it.
However, they were having only 1 or 2 children. The peasants were having large families. For whatever reason, the "Ataturk Turks" committed race suicide. The let the Muslim fanatics outbreed them.
