State Dept: U.S. Nukes Down 85%, From 31,255 to 4,804

'We Still Have More Work To Do''

The State Department's Rose Gottemoeller, under secretary for arms control and international security, spoke at the Brookings Institution Thursday where she reaffirmed the United States' "unassailable" commitment to putting the nuclear weapons genie back in the bottle. Gottemoeller told the attendees at the Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Initiative-sponsored event that "the U.S. commitment to achieving the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons is unassailable."

She went on to note that the nation's stockpile of active weapons is down 85 percent from maximum cold war levels, falling to 4,804 in 2013 from a high of 31,255. But, she said, "We still have more work to do."

We should have more nukes than any other single country does. We are America. End of story. I suppose we could have a large number of multiple warheads counted as one, but I want my country to be intimidating as hell to the enemy, not to appear feeble with a degraded nuclear stores.

When Americans stop being forgiven, they start self punishing.

Is this total figure including MIRV or independent warheads?

The left actually believes that a weaker US makes a safer world because they cannot differentiate between good and evil.

This is one of the most alarming statistics I’ve seen in a long time. At a time when conventional armed forces are becoming crushingly expensive, nuclear weapons remain the ace in the hole that keeps the ultimate peace. We wince at the once-mighty Royal Navy’s struggle to afford only 6 destroyers, 13 frigates and 10 submarines, but we will soon face similar drastic cutbacks. Without an overwhelming nuclear advantage to back up conventional forces that are too thin to withstand combat attrition, America will become risk averse and impotent. Of course, that appears to be the goal.

We still have enough warheads to blow up the planet. Other than having a weak CIC, I'm not worried. Always remember when you read these articles that our Trident submarines are out there, and they are not going away even as much as the cry-baby liberals want unilateral disarmament.

These hippie-dippy peaceniks will never get that there will always be very bad leaders in the world who cannot be changed. Witness Kim Jung ill and the Taliban and other radical Muslims. There is no talking to them. Their ideology and/or theology guide them to do great harm to others. Same as any ghetto in the US.

I used to ask the hippies back in 60's and early 70's the following: If you are walking down a dark alley or a street of ill repute, and someone comes at you with a knife and you have a knife, will you lay yours down first? I got a couple that said yes (sheesh). Most would look at me blankly and give me the peace sign while walking away.

This is not a good idea. Or, could it be treason?

Will 4,800 nuclear weapons deter a country from attacking you? Mine shaft gap.

That makes me feel a bit more secure. I have to keep in mind that we have more satellites than the public knows about so the same might be true about nukes as well.

Im sure theres some malice but lets think about someone back in history who would explain this. Remember George McGovern, flaming liberal? He pushed all sorts of silliness when in DC. Eventually, he was retired and became a businessman...motels I think. This is when the reality of all his past silliness dawned. He complained loudly about how onerous it was to live under the laws he championed. This is how it is w/ DC dwellers. They exempt themselves from the laws/consequences they force on the rest of us. Basically, theyre detached from the rest of the country. Only when they lose the exemptions do they realize how FUBAR all of their handiwork is. So, I suppose it some stupid is involved but mostly its arrogance.

Herein lies the problem. As long as our representatives are allowed to remain exempt nothing will change. They must experience the hardships they require us to bear.

Completely agree. As someone said after the Cuba piece, "he's working through the left's bucket list". And this is most definitely on the list.

You can almost hear the presentation once Iran goes nuke: "Our deterrence has failed to deter. That policy has failed. So my admin is today making a bold gesture in dismantling every single nuclear warhead as a first step in the whole planet ridding themselves of these terrible instruments of hatred".

Russian quality control is what’s wrong with the picture. We can afford to have fewer nukes. Ours are more likely to work, AND to hit their targets.

That's what the Germans thought. You might be right and you might be wrong, but strategic decisions must not be based on hopeful supposition or temporary advantages. One Russian technological advance could change the whole picture. Rose Gottemoeller's "We still have more work to do" statement indicates that further American nuclear weapons reductions are planned, so this problem is only going to get worse.

4800 will suffice if it's the right 4800 and the administration maintains a credible determination to use them if necessary. This administration has no such credibility, and in its absence 100,000 won't be enough. The real problem is that somebody at State has decided that zero is a better number than 4800, and that if we attain that the world will somehow be safer. That individual needs to be as far from a position of responsibility as we can manage.

"...she reaffirmed the United States' "unassailable" commitment to putting the nuclear weapons genie back in the bottle."

Good luck with that dipsh*t as Iran, Norks, and China build up their nuclear stockpiles. Really? Why have we allowed our education system to brainwash these people out of commonsense?

Like I said above, there will always be bad guys. Unfortunately, it's a dark side of human nature. Just be glad we still have some 4000 warheads to protect you and yours from evaporating. But then, she would probably be okay with completely dismantling our military.

Judging by Sandy, that would be a waste of nukes as those cities would crumble within a few days and the inhabitants would be starving to death within 30. It’s more likely that our power facilities are EMP’d, our military bases and ports nuked and a good dose of high yield on the west to mid-west coast for that prevailing wind to carry radiation across our country.
Remember, Obama said he would not under any circumstances use nukes in response to nukes.

tick-tock, the clock is running for our enemies as zero’s administration winds down.
