A man shot three members of his family, killing two of them, before turning the gun on himself on New Years Day in east Modesto, authorities said.
The incident happened around 9 p.m. in the 2000 block of Sharilyn Dr., which is part of a residential neighborhood to the south of Floyd Avenue and west of Oakdale Road.
Police responded to the home after a man called 911, saying he had killed his family.
Early Friday, police confirmed they believe the incident is a murder-suicide involving a couple and their adult children. Two men and a woman have been killed, with a second woman taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Investigators believe the father, a man in his mid to upper 50s, was the shooter, Sgt. Mark Weiglein said Friday. The mans wife and son were killed, and his 34-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital. The four were alone in the house at the time of the incident.
Police said they have not established a motive, and are not releasing any names pending the ongoing investigation. Weiglein said the son also was believed to be in his 30s, and that all four apparently lived in the home.
Neighbors didnt have any indication anything was wrong, Weiglein said.

Domestic violence offenders are NUTS!
0bama’s Fault! These ‘kids’ wouldn’t still be living at home if there were jobs and opportunities out there! *Snark*
Sad way to end the year but, somehow I think alcohol had something to do with this.
I’m not sure this will qualify as run-of-the-mill domestic violence; wouldn’t be surprised if there was some long-term mental issue involved.
While this guy was in a killing mood, I could have suggested some for him to kill and leave his poor family alone.
But you concur someone is NUTS.
I would think so; there is no defense for the act. In my area it seems there has been an increase in the number of people walking in front of trains, and I wouldn’t be surprised if economic issues are at the root of these cases. There has been no recovery in the northeast, and taxes just climb higher; middle-aged people and older are finding themselves involuntarily retired, with little hope of working again in a situation that would enable them to at least fulfill the financial obligations they incurred in the “before-times” (before the “new normal”).
Back in the mid 70s my girlfriend and I supervised a couple of group homes in that neighborhood. ...My condolences to the surviving family members and friends.
Sad. I hate to see people lose hope. Still the MURDER/suicide is beyond the comprehension of me. Even more than just selfish. Selfish with a vengeance. Selfish with extreme prejudice.
If you want to kill yourself, fine. But why take others with you?
It is hard to get a good response to that...
When done due to economic reasons, they are often being practical and selfless; life insurance proceeds will benefit their family, and it appears to them (in a depressed state of mind) to be the best solution.
There’s nothing selfless about a husband and father killing himself. His family will never recover from the pain of losing him.
It may be a selfless act for a depressed person who doesn’t want to die or escape from his problems, but literally has no way out. You can second-guess them if you’d like.
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Suicide, sure, MURDER/suicide, not so much.
Yes, that’s a horrible twist; I’d imagine that brings some kind of closure to a sick mind.
Decades ago a man killed his family here in NJ (John List?), and he disappeared. He was caught decades later (from someone watching “America’s Most Wanted”, IIRC). He had killed them because he had money problems, and he also thought the kids would be sinful as they became teenagers. Photos from the crime scene showed some kind of Tiffany chandelier that would have fixed his money problems and then some, but there was no way around the religious weirdness (some kind of fundamentalist).
