A link to this thread has been posted on the Ebola Surveillance Thread
Obola is a portmanteau of Obama + Ebola.
Now, THAT makes sense!
I had to look up portmanteau. Never heard it before, which is unusual, since I read constantly as a kid, with a huge dictionary (my mom’s) sitting next to me.
I think morpheme is the more “correct” term, but you figured out I wasn’t talking about a briefcase ;)
Shoot. Back to Google dictionary.
How do you know those words? Do you know a lot of words people don’t know the definition of?
“Do you know a lot of words people dont know the definition of?”
I have been told I have a large vocabulary, but I am always hearing or reading words I had no idea existed. I just happen to know some that are maybe a bit more obscure I guess, so it’s only the few I’ve been exposed to. I know about the word morpheme from the 2nd definition of portmanteau in the Webster’s online dictionary:
1: a large suitcase
2: a word or morpheme whose form and meaning are derived from a blending of two or more distinct forms (as smog from smoke and fog)
There is an annual portmanteau contest or some such. Usually there are some pretty funny portmanteaus and definitions submitted.
I don’t know if anyone else has claimed this one, but I like it:
Portmantoux test:
A test (usually verbal or written) that can indicate a rare disease that causes the inability read or hear a portmanteau without severe chest pain/coughing attacks.
or something equally inane I guess.
Thanks for the ping!
(Since all records of obama's past were lost in a tragic boating accident and fire, no one can be certain that the guy in the red circle isn't him...)
Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.
The purpose of the Bring Out Your Dead ping list (formerly the Ebola ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.
So far the false positive rate is 100%.
At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the Bring Out Your Dead threads will miss the beginning entirely.
*sigh* Such is life, and death...
I love Nebraska. Omaha is just another city though.
I’ve been in Omaha, but I didn’t see any Hell. I guess that’s because I only got off the freeway once.
