Huckabee 2016 Could Be 2008 Redux
US News & World Report's The Run 2016 ^ | January 5, 2015 | David Catanese

His coalition of evangelicals could be broken up by new alternatives like Ted Cruz.

Mike Huckabee loyalists still believe their guy was screwed in 2008.

After pulling off an impressive upset of the better-funded Mitt Romney in the Iowa presidential caucuses, the former Arkansas governor eyed a second Republican primary win in South Carolina.

His allies are convinced the Palmetto State should’ve been his for the taking – if not for the peculiar, lethargic candidacy of former Sen. Fred Thompson, a friend of Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who siphoned conservative voters from Huckabee in South Carolina.

Thompson’s 16 percent slice of the vote there was enough to push McCain past Huckabee by only 3 percentage points. Three days later, Thompson called it quits and McCain had a bolt of momentum.

“Fred Thompson was in there for that reason,” asserts David Lane, an influential California-based evangelical organizing pastors nationwide to participate in politics. “He was there to stop Huckabee. McCain then won Florida the next week. If Huckabee had won South Carolina, he would have been the nominee in 2008 and would have beat [Barack] Obama.”

Though Lane makes a compelling point, it’s surely an arguable one. Newt Gingrich’s 2012 primary victory in South Carolina over Mitt Romney proved fleeting, as the establishment band of the party rushed in with resources to crush Gingrich in Florida and beyond. The same could’ve happened to Huckabee....

Gomer would've beat Obama in 2008? In what alternate reality?

Huck seems to me like GWB.
He’d be a great next door neighbor, but not so hot as POTUS.

I agree.

If Huck had been successfull and stayed in it - I would have supported him a whole lot more than I supported McCain.

That's an interesting assertion. I don't think its true, but well - OK.

Fred Thompson made a good impression early on. But he was also way in over his head. He had no business playing with the big boys.

Governor Palin tried to drag him across the finish line, and for awhile there they were winning, but then he suspended the campaign to go facilitate TARP and that was all she wrote.

Gomer 2008.. could have been .........

EXCEPT for massive voter fraud... <<— OH THAT!..
Yes.. and perfected for 2012... What of 2016?..
fair election.?. ONLY If you’re a “dreamer”..

even the republican primary in 2012 was “TAINTED”....
maybe the last few republican primarys..

AND... In many places in State and Local elections..
the elections are SHAMS.. even the dead vote multiple TIMES..
and............... no voter I.D... is demanded by the crooks (and/or people)..

America HAS NOW the ones to represent them.. accurately...
Don’t say a lot about “THE PEOPLE”..

Cause if they DIDN’T.... they would CHANGE THEM... They Don’t.. for the most part..
We’re a bit late to elect George Carlin as President.. He’s DEAD..

BUT alas.. probably voting in Chicago.. or New York City.. or Both..
ADD: L.A., San Fransicko, Seattle, and most North Eastern Cities..

His young wife was making many of the campaign decisions. That usually doesn’t work out well.

2008 came down to Huck, Romney, McCain, and Fred Thompson. Thompson was the conservative, but foolishly admitted that he rarely attended church. Much of the evangelical vote went to minster Huck, but there was no reason to think that he was really viable as a national candidate.

The media undercut Thompson and played down his victories and killed his momentum, Thompson was the guy that the media did not want in the 2008 race.

And Thompson is not a light weight like Romney, who has nothing but money.

I disagree. Thompson IS a lightweight. If he had gravitas, if he had serious abilities and asperations for being the president, he sure has kept them to himself.

All the other wanna-be’s from 4 and 8 years ago are back. Newt Sarah, Perry, Mitt, Jeb and so many others. But not Fred.

He simply didn’t want the job.

But, I personally think he lost his FoxNews gig.

He didn’t just walk to play games and see if he wanted to run.

His shows were a bit folksy but, when he lost his radio show and now FoxNews, it’s time to move on.
