The Associated Press is among the numerous news outlets that have been self-censoring images of the Charlie Hebdo cartoons that may have provoked Wednesday's deadly Paris attack. In a statement, the news organization said that such censorship is standard policy:
None of the images distributed by AP showed cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Its been our policy for years that we refrain from moving deliberately provocative images.
The conservative Washington Examiner publication then pointed out that the AP nonetheless continued to carry an image of Andres Serrano's 1987 "Piss Christ" photographwhich is certainly provocative, having been the subject of massive controversy in the United States, and which was actually vandalized by Catholic protesters when it was on display in 2011 in, as it happens, France. (See the damaged photo, which depicts a crucifix submerged in the artist's urine, above.)
Some time after the Examiner's post, the AP appears to have taken the "Piss Christ" image off its website.

I was in the media (net and print) over a decade.
There are several current and ex journos on FR that will tell you the same thing. If a newspaper or TV says water is wet, stick your head in the bucket to check.
Everything in a paper is there for 1 of 2 reasons. To meet the publisher’s agenda demands. 2: to fill space around ads.
Period.
We used to undercut the temp my several degrees since area businesses complained that the truth hurt people going out to their businesses.
The freaking temperature.
But it was art ...
I thought that the most accurate description of the press was given in an old science fiction story by Mark Clifton titled “When They Come From Space.”
They obviously didn’t think it was offensive because they’ve had that policy for awhile and kept Piss Christ on the site. This is purely a move to avoid bad publicity. Cowards and hypocrites.
Oh, NOW they care. F AP!
i thik some conservative artists need to make some rt up we’d appreciate.
how about a muslim waterboarding diorama - “jihadi car wash”
how about dexter performing an “abortion” on an abortionist, holding up his nutsack?
how about a bunch of femen hags being burnt at the stakes?
how about an minteractive display where you push a button and a homeless guy pees on a copy of ayers/obama’s “dreams of my father”?
how about a slideshow montage of all the conservative HOPE hjacks that have been done - NOPE, DOPE, Get a ROPE, HOPE He FAILS, all of em...
Piss Kennedys
not to be confused - especially now - with the Dead Kennedys..
Another story.
NPR voluntarily didn’t run the 2005 cartoon of a turban Mohammed. Fair enough. They didn’t want to offend thousands
Shortly after that, to offend thousands of conservatives, NPR PAID a cartoonist for a vulgar article on “Learn to speak Tea Bag”. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=120344047
NPR refused to apologize or withdraw the filthy cartoon.
Piss Taliban.
One of those ideas would be a great web site allowing remote controlled action in Plains, GA someday soon.
It’s rather simple. Christians don’t kill you for displaying disparaging images, Islamics do.
Hoping to see Jon Stewart (real name Jonathon Lebowitz) tear into these Jew-hating filth on tonight’s show.
I’m sure it will be a real profile in courage.
What a worthless load.
Shove it, AP.
You time will come after CW-II.
It will not be a good time.
Piss AP.
Something along the Lines of Joe Cartoon’s gerbil, frog, etc in a blender.
Ditto. They have been neutered first by their 'Political Correctness' and now by their very real fear of being targeted by 'The Religion of Peace'(C)
Yes, it should be removed because it's offensive.
But don't compare it (as the AP will) with the Mohammed pictures which were taken down because the AP is afraid of the violence from those who demand it censured.
For now, yeah.
