The CDC has been quietly adding hospitals to their growing list of Ebola Treatment Centers (ETC), updated weekly.

An ETC is a facility that has a plan to care for a patient with confirmed Ebola. These facilities must meet a minimum criteria, including sufficient Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and training, as well as clinical care of a patient using the challenging PPE a healthcare worker must use to care for an Ebola patient.

Yesterday, two new such ETCs were added to the list in Pennsylvania.

48 hospitals? Why so many?

Good question, especially considering they tend to be clustered and not uniformly dispersed. Note also, there is a shortage of PPE.

Consider also, a level 4 facility is a level 4 facility and not limited to Ebola, provided the ventilation system is set up right (so known airborne diseases can be treated there also).

The cynical will say this is just another opportunity to spend public money (or divert it), but assuming the facilities have been modified, it is likely they will have fewer than 10 beds each. that would be a max of 480 patients. Not many, considering the possibilities if there is even one major outbreak.

I saw the clustering and assumed the same on bed space. Hospitals just don't have those type of resources to throw away on empty beds.

This raises a great many questions.

Much of the country is “uncovered” without a hospital within driving distance - and that includes some very metropolitan areas.

The CDC has been quietly adding hospitals ..

No need for 'quietly' sans yet more .gov perfidy.

(the 'nothing at all to worry about, etc etc' contingent should be along shortly . . . )
