KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama promoted a proposal to offer two years of free community college tuition to students on Friday but the plan and its $60 billion pricetag over 10 years immediately faced skepticism from Republican lawmakers.

Obama floated the education idea on the third and final day of a tour to promote agenda items being prepared for his Jan. 20 State of the Union address, a speech that will be his first to the U.S. Congress since Republicans won the Senate in November elections.

“but the plan and its $60 billion pricetag over 10 years”

Because the treasury isn’t empty enough already. Yeesh.

No way that pricetag stays that low, either. Like everything else this administration does, the cost to the taxpayer will be far, far more than promised.

When you print your own money, who cares that you’re awash in a sea of money?

I am so glad that the recently elected republicans are ALL speaking out in opposition to this this decree.

$60 billion isn't exactly low, but then I don't believe it either

However, the president's announcement said that the plan could benefit as many as nine million students who could save an average of $3,800 per year. This would put the total cost at a little more than $34 billion.

Remeber that arrogant pos promised also what the American people would save $2800 on their health care bill a year. We know how that turned out, don't we?

I’ve known people that thought if somebody was “lucky” and “rich” enough to be a college professor or doctor, etc. that they should be made to work for free. I will tell them that’s what they did in the USSR.

Is this Obama’s final act in his goal to fundamentally transform America. Check out this interview with former KGB Agent Yuri Besmenov.....let the indoctrination begin ...as Besmenov says...the time bomb is ticking

It’s only money and is easily printed.

What? Do not understand your point?

I am going to assume you are referring to point 2. After 2 years of free college, if you do not understand that only the government can give you stuff then your 2 years have been wasted. Paying taxes is for other schmucks.

Yep, and once that happens. My years of working part time jobs and going into debt will be meaningless. This will galvanize many, many, many, young people. Once this happens whatever future I may have had is thrown away as I get to work a nearly dead end job that I don’t want to be at. Forgiveness of student loan debt will be the destruction of higher learning in America.

I don’t disagree. But the university push to build all these buildings on their campuses—a few with 300 buildings—and the costs of administrators with $100,000+ salaries make a poor impression.

I worked my way through community and then on to pay for another four yrs of my first degree. Working and paying for it on my own made me into the very successful person I am today. How will people who have had everything given to them turn out? Oh. Well, I think we already see the answer to that question .....

They will then expect the remainder of their education, their first job job and every promotion after that just GIVEN to them ....

I just have to wonder .... Does Obama also just suck as a parent? Does he just hand everything over to his own kids — do they ever have to earn Anything??

I don’t know about Cali but here in New York when I went in the early to mid 70s it was practically free. I forget but it was some insanely low amount, something like $600 a year.....until liberals took over the universities. I went the same time the WW2 era professors, teachers and faculty started retiring and were replaced by the “peace and love/anti-capitalist generation” which have now enslaved kids to practically a lifetime of debt in exchange for indoctrination into a political system responsible for 100 million plus deaths.

Does anybody realize that this is only for Blacks and a minimal amount of
alternate minorities? I doubt it will be sold that way, ever. And buried after it passes.

Having personal experience with these types of outreaches it seems like a repeat.
Whites not welcome.

And just why would a Republican controlled congress vote for this?

I guess the President can use his magic pen and write a new law.
