The police didn’t just “happen” upon their little enterprise.... Someone called them

Well this law, and most local ordinances like it, are designed to keep out aggressive peddling outfits, gypsies, and Irish Travelers.

Sounds like the cops went overboard on these two, and then had to back track and claim that it was only because of Christie's "State of Emergency."

Wrong. The cops have wide discretion. They could have just let it go, no harm, no foul.

Yeah right....these morons enforce idiotic laws. They know what’s right and wrong. They are just as responsible for the police state we live in, as the lawmakers and clowns that vote them in.

It is the cops fault. The SCOTUS recently found that cops can make up their own law. Besides, they always have prosecutorial discretion.

Wow....I didn’t know cops just blindly ‘enforce the law’ (some animals comes to mind). Here I thought these were smart/articulate peeps whom could discern what/where to ‘enforce’ < /s >

I’ll presume the po-po nudged the youngsters to contact their Reps to repeal these type of asinine ‘Laws’?? Or to at least give them an ear-full?

“not the cops fault obviously, it’s the local law makers who made that dumb law.”

Teenagers, male and female, came to the front door of an elderly WWII Army combat veteran and his elderly wife to solicit. After opening the front door and talking to the teenagers, they knocked him down to the floor, brutally beat and kicked him until he was mortally injured, beat and kicked his wife until her ribs were broken and a lung was punctured, looted their home, and left them both for dead. The husband died, and the wife survived with permanent injuries.

The laws discouraging soliciting on private property and homes are justifiable for far more important reasons than just the nuisance factor.

What needs to be done is to provide a middleground which protects homeowner safety and privacy while also encouraging initiative among the honest and hardworking youth.

I wonder who the busy body who called the cops was.

I agree, they were just following orders, like the guards at Auschwitz.

Yes it is the cops fault as much as it is the law makers fault.

You fill all the teen jobs with illegal aliens and then you put the teens out of the labor market by forcing them to pay off the mafia to shovel their neighbors' snow?

I would bet you a million dollars if these kids were Mexican illegal aliens, the cops would have just looked the other way.

“We were just following orders!”

That's the same excuse the Nazi's used at Nueremberg.

It’s not a dumb law. Door to door solicitation is a pain in the arse and before they put these laws into place, people were bugged non-stop in many areas.

They could have handed out flyers.

Although the cops are not responsible for the law, I’m not buying that “just following orders” excuse. If the cops had refused to enforce this useless ordinance, the public would have backed them.

Cops fault. No sense of proportion. They chose to enforce this against a bunch of kids out doing what kids have done since forever. They should have been writing tickets for overdue parking meters to support the welfare state instead, rather than bothering some kids making an honest buck.

Maybe the law was passed to stop home repair scam groups from taking advantage of such situations. We have a problem with scam artists around here sever so often.

Right, because we can't ask police officers to use their brain or anything.

There is plenty of blame to go around. Lawmakers were stupid (or more likely corrupt) to pass that law. The police were also stupid (or ordered to support corruption) for enforcing a bad law. As a juror, I would ignore that law and go for jury nullification - someone has to do the right thing.
