Drone-safety debates have inflamed after a pilot reported having a close encounter with a remote-controlled device at 4,000 feet while navigating a Southwest Airlines flightto LAX. The plane was making its final descent into the Los Angeles airport Sunday when the pilot reported the close call, according to audio obtained by NBC News:

Precisely.
Several years ago, a commenter at LGF revealed the existence of large fortified mosques popping up near CA airports including LAX.
4000 ft? seems a bit high for a drone.
That’s what laser guided 2,000 lb bombs are for.
I was flying a kite at a park next to the renton airport (where they make 737’s) using fishing wire. As I’m enjoying the day some police officers walk up and said they had some complaints from pilots that they had to go around my kite.
I saw them do it.
Some off the shelf quads can be opeated to 2 km at least. First Person View is required buy even that is relatively inexpensive. A 2 km range transmitter as cheap as $12. The whole setup less than $200...way less.
My youngest son and I are starting quads. I paid $30 for mine, $60 for his. Mine...Hubsan... isn’t as easy to fly as his..Syma. both have cameras that take decent video.
Flight times are short, around 5 minutes, and charging takes around an hour.
A lot of fun.
So, why were you violating federal law and hazarding the pilots’ lives by putting an obstacle to flight ops/safety in the way of aircraft near an airport?

They were all light aircraft, I was young, and the kite wasre not technically in the flight path. It was just “near” it.
Also, is ignorance of the law an excuse these days? ;-)
This was predictable. Allowing an undisciplined, irresponsible public to use the danm things was a mistake from the start. Wasn’t it obvious that this was going to happen?
Yeah, we can solve the problem by requiring a government run training course (for a nominal fee), government issued license (for another nominal fee and be prepared to explain in writing why you have a "legitimate reason" for owning a drone and your address may not fall within the flight path of any municipal airport) and also pass a security clearance and background check. Oh, and yes, by all means, tax the crap out of those buggers...
While we are at it, what the hey, we should probably ban parks from being located within 25 miles of any airports as well.
I MEAN WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND SAYS, "HEY, LET'S GO DOWN TO THE AIRPORT AND FLY THIS BABY AROUND PLANES THAT ARE IN THE AIR!"
Coverup, coverup, coverup---"There is no spoon," according to "The matrix."
And no Islamic terror according to Obama.
I keep wondering when those Russian shoulder-fired AA-missiles obtained in Libya will show up here. One wonders how big a drone it would take to launch one remotely.
The laws of physics don’t care how ignorant you are about them.

I have a Syma X5C on order. My first quad.
Oh I hope you like it and find it as easy to fly as my youngest son and I did. Even mrs p6 has flown it indoors.
Hopefully you will get the X5C-1 updated version. Most people do but there are still a few originals around. Not a big deal really. The updated has slightly more range and a bit more stability.
You can tell if it’s the updated version if S5C is stamped on top and the X is red.
Also there should be a red rectangle with 2.4G stamped on it.
Again nothing to worry about, both fly fine!
Check out my youngest son’s first outside flight here. Recorded on the SD card.

There are a couple of other videos on the site as well. He took it to around 80 feet high, more than I advised and he hadn’t really learned how to keep it stable so it gets a bit shaky.
Thanks. The one thing I was concerned about was the quality of the video. I guess I shouldn’t expect much for $60. I’ll check out your video when I get home.
Flying a kite in a plane’s flight path is definitely a matter of physics.
Yeah, My point in my last post is that it was not in it. It was near it. And, truth be told, I didn’t know it was that high.
