Michael Gerson: In matters of faith, Scott Walker’s lack of grace is embarrassing
Kansas City Star ^ | February 26, 2015 | Michael Gerson

Posted on 02/27/2015 2:37:55 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

When Scott Walker pronounced himself agnostic about President Barack Obama’s patriotism and Christian faith, it must have seemed like a clever formulation. “I’ve never asked him, so I don’t know,” he said. And about Obama’s Christianity: “I’ve never asked him that.”

Walker quickly found his pitch unequal to the presidential big leagues. His argument can’t be generalized into a rule. I have never met Billy Graham, for example, but I’m pretty sure what he believes. As political attacks go, this one is particularly heavy-handed—the equivalent of saying: As far as I know, my opponent is not a swindler and a degenerate. A politician who tried this form of passive aggression before also got criticized for it.....

For Walker, this is more of a paper cut than a chest wound. But it can’t be good for the Republican Party, which some Americans associate with religious exclusivity, for a front-runner to sound religiously exclusive.

Walker’s Baptist upbringing—he is the son of a pastor—does put a particular emphasis on the personal acceptance of Christ. It was another Baptist governor, Jimmy Carter, who elevated the idea of being “born again” into the realm of presidential politics. For evangelicals in general, there is no such thing as a birthright Christian. Faith requires a conscious and highly consequential decision—a choice that some do not make.

But here Obama has been as forthright as anyone could be. “I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian,” he said in a 2008 Christianity Today interview......

Questioning this affirmation involves a serious charge—an accusation of the worst sort of cynicism. And it is simply not the role of a Christian layman to publicly dispute the self-identification of other Christians, especially in a political context. It is a practice that can lead down ugly alleys of sectarianism...

Here Gerson's making up how this "issue" occurred and what Walker said.

The Obamamedia is still working to make it more of a "chest wound" than a "paper cut" [when in fact, it's looking more like a gold star].

Billy Graham shows by how he lives that he is a Christian.

The illogic is stunning.

Funny how the left uses religious arguments to support the Imperial godless state.

Barack Obama loves America the way that Arlo Guthrie, Pete Seeger, and Abbie Hoffman loved America.

And he is a Christian the same way that William Sloane Coffin was a Christian.

To the left, “America” and “Christianity” are simply bundles of semiotics that should be manipulated to make collectivist ideas palatable to non-intellectuals.

It’s interesting the author goes back to Walker’s upbringing to define his religious affiliation. If we go back to Obama’s upbringing, we must conclude he’s a Muslim.

But here Obama has been as forthright as anyone could be. “I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian,” he said in a 2008 Christianity Today interview. “I believe in the redemptive death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I believe that that faith gives me a path to be cleansed of sin and have eternal life. But most importantly, I believe in the example that Jesus set by feeding the hungry and healing the sick and always prioritizing the least of these over the powerful. I didn’t ‘fall out in church’ as they say, but there was a very strong awakening in me of the importance of these issues in my life. I didn’t want to walk alone on this journey. Accepting Jesus Christ in my life has been a powerful guide for my conduct and my values and my ideals.”

Zero is not exactly being forthright. It's a nice soundbite from the chief liar, but his "fruits" are non-existent.

Scott Walker got this same treatment back in 2011.

Scott Walker Believes He’s Following Orders from the Lord

This is where that snark came from - Walker's talk to the Christian Businessmen’s Committee in Madison on November 13, 2009.

Barry also said he opposed homosexual marriage in 2008. Well how’s that working out nowadays?

“I am a Christian, and I am a devout Christian,” he said in a 2008 Christianity Today interview...

For Gershon to cite this as proof-positive of Obama's faith is patently absurd. Devout Christians go to church regularly, or at least often. Obama does neither. You can count the number of times Obama has attended a Christian Church on one hand. His attendance so bad, the MSM had to step up and make excuses why he couldn't always go.

Hmm. Clue me in in any brand of Christianity that does not include a personal acceptance of Christ?

This innuendo is not sticking. The illogical nature of this “have you stopped beating your wife “ bull merd isn’t working anymore because we look at what is happening now with King Bozo and we know what the media fabricated for 7 years. We have all had enough of the crap, Mr, Gerson.

In his second term Obama stopped even trying to make a photo op out of going to church on Christmas and Easter

The State Media is going to work to define Scott Walker as "mean spirited" which is the last thing he is - in fact, his calm, polite demeanor [while "running his opponents through"] is one of his best political qualities.

It's an hour but by watching it ALL you will have a good idea how Walker is going to campaign and interact with the media and critics.

This is the Bush team sending out the attack dogs. I though Jebbie was above all this. The Bushes need to go away.

Questioning this affirmation involves a serious charge . . .

Almost like questioning the commitment the Obamessiah made to real marriage at that same point in his political career.

That’s because the election was over and he no longer needed to lie about being a Muslim.
