Why not use a (wait for it...) gas chamber?
If you go to sleep and the oxygen is replaced with nitrogen ... do you wake up while you strangle / suffocate ?
Use helium.

What’s wrong with general anesthesia followed by a plastic bag and duct tape arounth their neck/head? That’s just CO2 and nitrogen once the oxygen is used up.
I have experienced mild nitrogen narcosis on a 120’ dive. Probably a more pleasant way to go than most of death row deserves.

Many of the very same people who claim that lethal injections are cruel and unusual punishment (when administered to convicted murderers) — many of these people also support “assisted suicide” or euthanasia (of people, who have committed no crimes), using these same chemicals. They don’t even see the contradictions.
The problem with using gases to execute is that the condemned must cooperate, holding their breath until they gasp and inhale a whole bunch of gas. If the condemned continues to breathe normally, they suffocate slowly and painfully, taking much longer to die.
Yet another reason for states to have the firing squad as an alternative means of execution. Cheap, low tech, certain, and needing no special equipment, supplies or expertise.
Plus..we get some C02 used up!!!

I worked for a place that kept a nitrogen atmosphere on one of the floors, they said that if you broke the rules and spent time in it without a partner and gear, that there was no warning that you were passing out and dying, that it totally sneaked up on you.
I went in many times alone and without gear, but I didn’t spend much time there.
Procure surplus aircrew oxygen masks from the Air Force which cover the nose and mouth and hook the hose up to a tank of carbon dioxide. Simple and cheap.
Dynamite is quicker and more certain.

Your body has no mechanism for sensing the absence of oxygen. It does have a means of sensing CO2 and pushing the panic button.
With N2 you will just pass out and asphyxiate.
Why not just throw them to polar bears? Then you get free cleanup as well.
i say, yes, do employ nitrogen to knock them out. Then, before they die, use a magic marker to draw a penis on their forehead. Then place a mirror in front of them and up the oxygen until they awaken just long enough to see their reflection, then pour on the nitrogen again until they are dead.
