A former substitute teacher in Ohio has been sentenced to 90 days in jail after she was found guilty of showing students a graphic horror movie during class. Sheila Kearns, 58, was convicted in January of four counts of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles, The Columbus Dispatch reported. The judge reportedly placed her on probation for three years but made the jail time a condition of her probation. Ms. Kearns apologized in court, saying she was aware of The ABCs of Deaths content but hadnt actually watched it prior to showing it during five separate Spanish classes at Columbus East High School in April 2013. I do love children, she said during Wednesdays hearing, The Dispatch reported. I am sorry. I should have watched the movie.

Is that like the guy who drowned after the third time he accidentally fell in the beer vat?
It wouldn't have taken so long if he hadn't kept getting out to pee...
ping
This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
Must not have been Miller then, or there'd have been no point in getting out to pee.
Frighteningly stupid.
If they can’t find subs that speak Spanish, they need to recruit in Texas. Offer a dishwasher or a cook at one of the cafes here union wage, and you could get not just that person, but a dozen relatives as well.
The movie is in English. She was supposed to be teaching Spanish.
Were I the judge I’d have given her 20 years for defrauding the taxpayers.

So she shows the kids a movie - how can they tell she is a language substitute teacher?
Guilty of bad judgement and she should be fired. I think jail time is overly harsh. Kids nowadays watch things much worse.
Ok...so let’s get this right. Heather has two mommies is ok still? Just trying to keep the facts right....
All around. The district should have rules about showing movies. Substitutes should have directions to not show movies that aren't rated G and family-appropriate, if they're allowed to show them at all. Even if the subs aren't given rules, they should know better.
Besides that, any even somewhat well-run public school has enough scrutiny of a substitute's classroom to know if something like this is going on.
That substitute must have had a lousy lawyer to not put it back on the administration for inadequate supervision. JMHO
My sentiments exactly. Jail time is ridiculous. Not to mention she'll be pretty much unemployable when she's released.
These were high schoolers, not little children. I remember watching Mad Max in my 6th grade class.
“disseminating matter harmful to juveniles”
At one time this included the promotion of homosexuality. Today on prime time TV they show 13 yr old boys giving homosexual kiss.
