Just watched my first (and last) viewing of the new TV show, 'Fresh Off the Boat' last evening. After about 10 minutes, I couldn't believe what I was watching - had this show been about any other people group it never would have made it to the studio.
The show is about a Taiwanese family that immigrates to America in the 1990's. It's main character retells his growing up in America. The father figure in the family works at a store for his brother in Washington D.C. but decides to open a restaurant in Orlando, FL. So he moves his whole family to Florida.
What happens next is basic montage of 'White Racists Stereotypes' strung together to make a story.
1) The main character wishes he was still living in D.C. - he flashes back to living there as some white tourists try and ask him where the White House is; of course they assume he can't speak English and break in to a broken American Chinese dialect while asking.
2) Next flash to the 'Western Steak House' restaurant the dad opens. Business is slow so he decides the reason "white people" aren't coming to his restaurant are, the greeter is Asian - so he proceeds to hire a white greeter.
3) The son has an ordeal as lunchtime at school when he opens the noodle dish his mom prepared for him. All the white kids are eating prepackaged 'Lunchables' and ask him to leave the table because his food smells. He moves to another table where a black kid sits, and the black kid says, "I guess those white people weren't as accommodating as you thought they would be."
This was pretty much the theme for 30 minutes.
First - it was horrible comedy writing. Obvious, trite humor.
Second - It was even worse acting. Not one of them can deliver a comedic line.
Third - were I an Asian, it would be an insult. (was this written by all white or black liberals?)
My guess, because Asians have a strong work ethic, they are the next group to be targeted by liberals as not representative of Obama voters as Christians have been targeted for years)
I’m an american citizen (born in taiwan), I can say that I have experiences dealing with racism while growing up in the 80’s, but I just have a different way of dealing with it. The “bad apples” apply to every group. It’s better to have a good sense of humor and just brush it off.
1) the broken American Chinese dialect thing, I’ve heard it from various people of different color, last time was years ago from this black teenager. I reply to her in perfect English that I don’t understand “African”.
2) I don’t know about the race thing with “western steak house” but I do know it’s better to always hire young white female hostess even at P.F.Changs. It’s more “racist” I think, if a chinese place put up a for hire sign that’s written in chinese.
3) the smelly food. It never happened when I was in grade school, since I ate cafeteria food. The only time someone complained about the smell of food, was a stir fried squid (late 90’s) dish that I was eating, I continued to eat and offered them some.
*Just to add, never had any “racist” experience until high school. probably due immaturity of kids involved. I also didn’t experience any in college.
I have 1-2 asian and 1 black friend while growing up, rest of my other friends are all white.
This show will probably fail, I only like cooking shows personally speaking.
fun fact, I’d say, the worst smelling food that I ever had, would be durian. no wonder they have a law in Singapore that banned it in subway.
The Chinese writer of this show is a hip-hop Asian,who hates white people.I find him laughable,since blacks consider Asians lower then their pit bulls!w

The two biggest street gangs in Calgary are, you guessed to, ‘Fresh Off the Boat’ gang and ‘Fresh Off the Boat Killers’. FOB was originally made of only Vietnamese juvenile reprobates selling drugs, sex and extortion, all at Forest Lawn High School in the 1990s. A dispute arose, some broke off, creating FOBK and starting a war. Now, both gangs are multi-ethnic, but try to kill each other on sight. They have spread across the city and Province. Lefties likely don’t like all the crime, but they must be happy that they ‘integrated’ successfully! I would bet that HA supplies both gangs.
Not especially happy with the name of this ‘show’.
Asians are not that prejudiced—Chinese hate Japanese (sometimes for good reason—Japanese killed 20+ Million Chinese in WW II) Japanese hate Koreans, and no one much likes Vietnamese. What I mean to say is they are Not Racist—anti-White haters. Its a myth.

I can explain this rationalization to you. I was attending an orientation for new hires at a hospital several years ago. The trainer asked the definition of racism. I said when one group oppresses another group simply due to the color of their skin. I was wrong. I was schooled that it is ‘Whites, who have the power, discriminating against Blacks, who don’t have the power’. Blacks, by the new definition, cannot be racist because they don’t have the power. It was certainly eye-opening for me.
What’s funny is Chinese people don’t exist on liberal mainstream TV for the most part.
That was 20 years ago now.
I read the makers of this show, and the writer of the book it was based on, talked to Margaret Cho about it to “learn from her mistakes”.

I don’t care how hard they try to bash whitey the show will last about a minute. Now liberal leftists are trying to pit asians against us. pitiful liberal whitey haters (themselves).
I’ve heard that twisted definition itself.
There is no way to resolve that definition unless “whites” subjugate themselves under “blacks”.

Been like that since the 80’s.
It’s hard to imagine what it would be like to be Chinese in the US but not here.
Were there many kids from Taiwan or Hong Kong around?
