Shattuck: Trump circus act not worth peanuts
The Boston Herald ^ | 03/19/15 | Tom Shattuck

Cue the helicopter. Cue the podium. Cue the hair. Cue the bucolic Granite State backdrop.

Trump is back in New Hampshire today, and he’ll have you know that he is seriously considering running for president.

Seriously. Think boardroom seriousness — “You’re fired!” and all that.

Sure, he also meant it four years ago when the Trump-o-copter delivered him to take a victory lap for forcing President Obama to fork over his birth certificate. And he meant it in 1987, 1988 and 2000. But this time is different, he’ll tell you.

In truth, it is not different, and he is not running, because though his celebrity status is alive and well, his career as a
serious politician has succumbed to self-inflicted wounds twentyfold.

President Obama dismissed him as a “carnival barker” four years ago, and when he heads back to New York City today, Trump really should tip his hair-hat as he passes over Bethel, Conn. — the birthplace of P.T. Barnum.

I enjoy Trump. Definitely not getting my primary vote, but hope he’s in the race.

Trump has more conservativism and honesty
and ability than most in DC and all in the
corrupt White Mosque.

Trump has very sound ideas about how to deal with Chinese trade, as well as a number of other good ideas. NONE of them would be endorsed by the Establishment Republicans in D.C.

He is devisive, irrelevant, an egomaniac, a narcissist and has really bad hair. Don’t we have one of those right now except for the hair?

I believe Trump is a patriot. Disagree on social issues, but he has some good ideas.
And I’ve still got the mancrush on him from his shredding of Wulf Blister one afternoon on CNN.
Of course I wouldn’t vote for him because he violates my “no Ivy League” premise.

President Obama dismissed him as a “carnival barker”

Probably the only thing Obama has gotten right in 6+ years.

Trump has the gift of gab and is a showman worthy of comparison to PT Barnum. He's the man who can bring a lot of voters over to constitutional conservative principles.

He just might be the spark the Cruz Crew needs. He's outside of DC duties, and will bring attention to himself, and Jeb and Christie will seem irrelevant and pathetic in comparison.

I have no clue why his joining the fray isn't universally considered a good thing.

Notice how you always take flak when you are over the target. If Trump is such a non candidate why bother to slam him?

I wish Trump would get in it. I would have no problem voting for him. Where have the crony career politicians that we keep electing to the Presidency gotten us? We have not had a truly capable guy that really wanted to help America since Ronnie Reagan. I’m perfectly willing to let somebody else have a go at it.

Just for the sake of argument here are some plusses to electing Trump:

1. The Presidency is a downgrade in lifestyle for Trump. He could probably care less if he got re-elected after 4 years.

2. Trump says he will self fund his campaign. This means he would take office beholden to none of these big money donors the other guys have to sell their soul to for campaign funding. I’m talking big corporate America.

3. Trump is pretty jacked about illegal immigration. He says he will build a fence. He knows how to build stuff. He seems to be serious about wanting stop the influx of illegals. Don’t start with he’s for amnesty. They all want amnesty after the border is secure. At least Trump says it would have to be on a case by case instead of a mass legalization.

4. Trump knows everybody in the world. He is on at least a nodding acquaintance with the leaders of most countries. Especially China and the Mideast. He says he will take a tough line with these people. That would be a change.

5. The United States is basically a corporation. Trump is a businessman and he knows how to make money. He knows how to create jobs. I think the guy is serious about getting manufacturing back. Levelling the playing field with China. Trump is a capitalist. God knows we need one.

6. The press is somewhat afraid of The Donald. He never backs down from what he says and they don’t know how to handle it. Plus who wants a ghetto beatdown from Donald Trump like Rosie O’Donnell got. Who else could ever have gotten away with going on TV and questioning Obama’s birth certificate? Nobody is the answer.

7. Trump is a celebrity. As the GOP candidate he would be a hot property for every talk show host on both sides. He would be getting free coverage 24/7 throughout the campaign which your average GOP guy would not.

So lets just see what happens. So far this election cycle is shaping up to be a gigantic bore. Trump will liven things up.
