Former Penn State president Graham Spanier on Wednesday filed a defamation complaint against Louis Freeh over claims made in the former FBI directors searing report on the Sandusky case.
An attorney for Mr. Spanier in 2013 had indicated the intention to bring a suit but asked the courts to stay the case because of criminal charges pending against the former university administrator.
With pretrial issues on appeal, Mr. Spanier decided to move forward with his civil complaint, said Libby Locke, one of his attorneys.
The criminal trial is basically on hold for now, she said. Dr. Spanier is anxious to vindicate his reputation and anxious to clear his name. Thats the reason for moving forward now.

Oh, boy. Here we go again.
Is that your facebook profile picture?
Are you still wishing ill of Louis Freeh, like you did after his car crash?
Freeh and the 11-11 PSU b.o.t. need to answer some questions - under oath. Period. If you can’t see this, you aren’t paying attention.
While it is true that Clinton’s former FBI director Louis Freeh was a rat partisan, it can also be said the Graham Spanier is a notorious bisexual, wife swapping degenerate. Spanier was very instrumental in creating a hedonistic, pro flaming homosexual atmosphere at Penn State. He endorsed and approved the annual feminist, lesbian C@NT Festival on the grounds of Old Main. He came into Penn State proudly proclaiming to make it the most pro-homosexual University in the world.
Anyone who dared whisper disapproval of his homosexual agenda and activities was immediately removed from campus. Spanier should be in prison along with his soap shower mate Jerry Sandusky.
There is NO glory in this debacle for anyone.
Louis Freeh did an absolute HATCHET job. He needs to answer some questions under oath that’s all.
Is anyone ever going to trial for this fiasco? How long can pretrial motions hold up a criminal case? Just curious as K. Kane is still the AG and has her own agenda.
Given the fact that the state has no evidence against GS/GS/TC, I’d say no. It will never go to trial.
“Anyone who dared whisper disapproval of his homosexual agenda and activities was immediately removed from campus. Spanier should be in prison along with his soap shower mate Jerry Sandusky.”
And “Joe Pa” can join them “in spirit.” He was as guilty as those who are still above room temperature for what happened at Penn State. For that old self-serving reprobate, “the team” (and his “legacy,” and all the money he was ratholing) was more important than the lives of those young boys! Personally, I hope he’s “roasting” as this is being written.
Spanier dodged a bullet in this case, going back to the well is idiotic.
He got Paterno fired as an afterthought to ensure his activities were blown off the front page. Whereas Spanier knew he was out that morning (if not before) and had his spin-doctors prepare a nice feel good statement to distribute to the press, Paterno got the call 10 minutes before the meeting.
Some of you crack me up. So much for due process I guess.
I don’t like Spanier as much as any of you. But that goes to his liberal tendencies, and his over spending (construction) at PSU while continuing to raise tuition at an unsustainable rate.
All that said, if anyone thinks he covered up for JS (a man he barely knew), then they lack basic common sense. Sorry.
That's what the Nuremburg Trials concluded and why Streicher got hung with the rest of that sorry bunch.
Thus, it should be with Spanier. He deserves his Nuremburg trial, of course. And so does his homo friendly agenda which made Sandusky's crimes possible and allowed them to escape public notice for a decade. They ought not to be buried with Joe Paterno, which is exactly what has happened.
You are applying 2011 knowledge (and sketchy 2012 convictions) to actions of 1998 and 2001.
It’s what JVP meant when he honestly said “With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I’d done more”...
With the benefit of hindsight, I wish Chuck Norris and Jack Bauer were stationed at the departure gates in Logan on 9-11. See how that works?
