(CNN)Ted Cruz is first out the gate.
The first-term senator from Texas announced early Monday he is running for president.
Cruz announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination in a 30-second video message in a tweet shortly after midnight Monday. Later in the day, he will appear at Virginia's Liberty University, the largest Christian university in the world, where he will make his in-person declaration.
"I'm running for President and I hope to earn your support!" Cruz said in his tweet.
Cruz, 44, will be the first candidate to formally throw his hat in the ring for what's expected to be a crowded GOP primary, with more than a dozen high-profile Republicans expressing serious interest in a White House run.
"It's a time for truth, a time to rise to the challenge just as Americans have always done," Cruz says over clips of American landscapes and people. "It's going to take a new generation of courageous conservatives to help make America great again. And I'm ready to stand with you to lead the fight."
The Houston Chronicle first reported that Cruz would declare his candidacy on Monday, skipping the step of forming an exploratory committee, according to advisers with direct knowledge of his plans.
Cruz, armed with his trademark ostrich boots and impressive oratory skills, has quickly made a name for himself in the past two years since he started in the Senate, solidifying his brand as a conservative firebrand willing to take on establishment Republicans in Washington.
A constant and vocal critic of the Obama administration, he's perhaps best known for his stalwart fight against Obamacare in 2013, which led to a tense standoff between Democrats

Yep, I noticed an increase in anti Cruz “news” stories the minute it was learned that he would announce today. Get ready, this is just going to get worse.

The fact that on of the potential major GOPs announced that is NOT Jeb is important. The Hillary EMail mess will be more tied to her potential run and this will force more people to deal with it, just with a real tangible opponent.
Amen to that. Youth and energy on the conservative side are DEFINITELY what America needs.
I am psyched!
Go Cruz!
I wonder if he chose to announce in Virginia as a symbolic gesture. Liberty University is so close to the homes of Patrick Henry, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.
Of course they’re going to Palinize him and make him out to be a right wing nut when in fact he’s accomplished on so many levels. They’d rather have a crack head in the WH
Cruz announcement on C-SPAN 2 in roughly twenty minutes.

Wants to just focus on if students were forced to attend, and that in her opinion many did not want to be there.
“Can ted Cruz win”
Ok I’ll play. Maybe.. maybe not. At this point what difference does it make?
If he becomes the presidential nominee — that is simply awesome. If he becomes a VP nominee that is better than nothing. If he is not Presidential or VP nominee he will still unite conservatives and pull the RINOS and the overall message to the norm (what the media call right).
It’s Cruz or lose. No matter what happens it is great that we actually have a candidate that we can rally behind. Let the primary process play out and lets see if Cruz can step up and move from preaching to the choir to playing big time politics and get lots and lots of votes.
That’s just pathetic.
Bill Handle lying about what a government closure is (he says it's everything shut down) then saying Cruz is way out there for thinking he should close down the government (maybe 15% of it) over Obamacare.
Others stating Cruz lives in his own world because he does not believe in man made climate change.
Others stating he does not relate to most Hispanics being from Cuba since they can just set a foot on the ground to be here legally versus the Mexican which can only sneak in here and get on every social program in the world.
Not even giving the impression of listening to the respect of a candidate. This is just going for the jugular by every branch of media.
Hope he kick’s their @ss.
