(CNN)Saudi and allied warplanes struck rebels in Yemen on Thursday, with Saudi Arabia threatening to send ground troops and inserting itself into its southern neighbor's civil war, potentially opening up a broader sectarian conflict in the Middle East.
The swift and sudden action involved 100 Saudi jets, 30 from the United Arab Emirates, 15 each from Kuwait and Bahrain, 10 from Qatar, and a handful from Jordan, Morocco and Sudan, plus naval help from Pakistan and Egypt, according to a Saudi adviser.
The Egyptian state news agency on Thursday quoted Egypt's Foreign Ministry as saying Egypt's support also could involve ground forces.
What do those countries have in common? They're all predominantly Sunni Muslim -- in contrast to the Houthi rebels, Shiite Muslims who have taken over Yemen's capital of Sanaa and on Wednesday captured parts of its second-largest city, Aden. The Saudis consider the Houthis proxies for the Shiite government of Iran and fear another Shiite-dominated state in the region.
"What they do not want is an Iranian-run state on their southern border," CNN military analyst Lt. Col. Rick Francona said of the Saudis.

So, the authors of this article believe that coming to the defense of an ally under attack is “inflaming” the situation?
And India invades Pakistan, so China invades India. Russia invades Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, etc, so Poland comes to their aid. Finland tries to take back their land from Russia. See where this is heading?
Iran bombs Israel to send all the Arab countries scrambling. Obama goes golfing.
You beat me to it!
I was going to say that “inflaming the situation” is exactly what the Saudi Arabia had in mind.
From the article:
“Hundreds of explosions ripped through Sanaa overnight”
...and “3,000 to 5,000 troops from the Saudi-led coalition are expected to reach Aden... in the next three days”
Has WW III begun in Yemen?
That is a lot of countries joining forces!
But wait, there can not be a WW without US participation.
Both of the others started without us.
We just help finish them. I hope we stick to that this time too.
You know, Yeman would make a great piece of land to add to the United States commonwealth. That’s gotta be some prime ocean front property there.
Actually, the talking heads at CNN simply aren’t sure who’s side their supposed to be on in this issue of protected minority against protected minority.
They only know, for sure, that they’re against whichever side the US picks, or appears to be beneficial for US interests.
I did not mention “started”.
Unless a superpower like USA or Russia or even China’s participation, it is difficult to classify any war as WW.
Egyptian navy has fired warning shots at Iranian warships near Bab el-Mandab Strait.
They go on to say that "The Saudi navys western fleet has also secured Yemens main ports including Aden and Midi. (and) has imposed a naval blockade on Bab El-Mandab strait which connects the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean."
If this is true, it is a significant development and is a signal of the likelihood of imminent overt hostilities between the Egyptian/KSA “coalition and the Iranians, which is a serious issue for all involved, not to mention the armed forces of almost every country in the world.
South Yemen for the 59th state!
Question: Is this the first time that Saudi Arabia has sent troops to fight terrorists in the region?
Guess Obama created a power vacuum and the Sauds are stepping in.
Iran will likely counter attack.
OK. It is WWII and Obama is to blame.
“Is this the first time that Saudi Arabia has sent troops to fight terrorists in the region?”
In 2009-2010 Saudi Arabia got into it with the Houthis near the Saudi border. A Saudi border patrol was ambushed, so the Saudis launched air strikes on the Houthis, sent some Jodanian and Moroccan special forces after them, and kept killing them for a couple of months after the truce, to make sure that it stung.

As a side note, some of the dummies are siding with Iran, because women in Iran can drive and Saudi women can’t.
Sure, the one place in the Middle East with no oil.
I beg to differ:
