Scott Walker gets boost in GOP poll, Chris Christie sinks

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker had the lowest unfavorability rating in a new poll of Republican voters, and scored the highest net-positive favorability at 35%.

A fresh poll of Republican voters brings good news for expected 2016 presidential contender Scott Walker — and the opposite for New Jersey’s Chris Christie.

Walker, governor of Wisconsin, pulls about even with “establishment” frontrunner Jeb Bush and scores a tie with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz in the Monmouth University Poll released Monday.

Christie pulled just 5% support in the poll, compared to 13% for Bush, former governor of Florida, and 11% each for Walker and Cruz.

While it’s obviously early in the Republican nomination game, the poll reinforces questions about whether Christie, governor of New Jersey, can produce a convincing rationale for a White House run some observers say he should have waged last cycle.

“Some candidates, such as Walker, seem to be better placed to form a winning coalition, while others, such as Christie, find their path to victory getting more narrow every day,” said Monmouth’s Patrick Murray in releasing the new poll.

In a hypothetical two-man contest, Walker bested Bush 46% to 42%.

Both men easily overwhelmed Christie in head-to-head matchups, Monmouth found.

NATIONAL: 2016 GOP REMAINS WIDE OPEN Walker surges; Christie drops [pdf] Monmouth University Poll

"West Long Branch, NJ – The 2016 Republican field continues to be crowded, with no single contender breaking from the pack according to the latest Monmouth University Poll of Republican voters nationwide. In hypothetical head-to-head contests for the GOP presidential nomination, the surging Scott Walker draws about even with both Jeb Bush to his left and Ted Cruz to his right, while Bush bests Cruz in a two-man match-up. Chris Christie, on the other hand, would end up on the losing end of a one-on- one with Walker, Bush, or Cruz.....

“The Republican field for 2016 remains more open than it has been in past contests. Some candidates, such as Walker, seem to be better placed to form a winning coalition, while others, such as Christie, find their path to victory getting more narrow every day,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute in West Long Branch, NJ.

A key indicator of the possible fortunes of these putative candidates is their overall favorability rating with the Republican base. Since Monmouth’s last national poll of GOP voters in December, Walker’s ratings have surged, while Christie’s have fallen. Bush, Cruz, Huckabee, and Santorum have also seen their standing improve among Republicans in the past few months.

Currently, Scott Walker has a net +35 positive rating – 44% favorable to just 9% unfavorable – although it’s worth noting that nearly half of Republican voters in the country don’t know enough about him yet to form an opinion. Four months ago, Walker had a net +20 rating (30% favorable to 10% unfavorable).

“Scott Walker may be that rare candidate who has true cross-over appeal in all wings of the GOP. The more Republican voters get to know him, the more they like him; and that goes for conservatives, moderates, and Tea Party supporters alike,” said Murray....

Christi is an after thought these days, fortunately. The Jebber will suck all the air out of the GOPe room. Hopefully those on the right will coalesce around a single candidate and not allow him to split the opposition and win the nomination.

I personally think a Cruz/Walker (my preference) or a Walker/Cruz ticket would be unbeatable.

Cruz debating the Hildabeast in the debates would be a joy to watch.

Not surprising because even a dead yellow dog for the Dem nominee would thump Christie in his home state.

I think Walker will take it.

I think Cruz sunk himself with this Religion crusade despite the early polls.

I'm with you except I favor Walker/Cruz, and then Cruz/???, reason being Walker is a sitting governor who has successfully and incredibly deftly navigated horrendous liberal/left minefields, and I think he has the hands-on know how how to accomplish this on a national level as well. And that way, too, we have Cruz, vice president and president of the senate, at the top for 16 years instead of 8. The President of the Senate, constitutionally speaking, is actually a powerful position but its powers lie unused, and Cruz (not McConnell) would be in fact in charge.

This article reinforces my suspicion that Walker is the fallback candidate for the uniparty establishment. Note that they say little about Cruz, even though they’re essentially tied in the polls. Note the headline as well. A better title for this article would be “You thought Christie and Bush suck, so pretty please vote for Walker.”

We may not like them, but the GOP-e is not stupid. They have to realize that Bush will not garner our support and that he’d likely go the way of McCain and Romney in the general. They do fear Cruz, though, so you hit the nail on the head. They likely will end up supporting Walker when push comes to shove, since they figure we’d be more likely to support Walker in the general than we are to support Bush.

Of course, they likely will push Bush for all he’s worth, but I’m thinking that Walker will win out in the end mainly because he’s not really either the GOP-e’s nor the Tea Party’s first choice, but because he likely would be an acceptable second choice for both.
