Rolling Stone's Rape Article Failed Because It Used Rightwing Tactics to Make a Leftist Point (barf)
New Republic ^ | 4/6/15 | Elizabeth Stoker Bruenig

If you type in the original page for Rolling Stone’s December 2014 story “A Rape on Campus: The Struggle for Justice at UVA,” you’ll be redirected to "What Went Wrong?,” a report about the article published Sunday by the Columbia Journalism Review. Rolling Stone officially retracted its blockbuster story, which had garnered more than 2.7 million views. The retraction comes on the heels of the Charlottesville Police Department’s announcement that there was not enough evidence to pursue an investigation of the story’s titular rape, which now appears to have been something between a delusion and a hoax. . . snip . . .

In balancing a systematic critique on a single person’s story, Erdely essentially used a rightwing strategy to make a leftist point. The trouble is only that the right is skilled at this game, and correctly deduced that undoing Jackie’s story would go a long way to endangering Erdely’s larger structural point. It’s an opportunity they never should have been given, both for Jackie’s sake, and for the sake of the victims who really do find themselves struggling for protection within a hostile justice system.

This is an unbelievable piece. "Rightwing tactics" are at fault for the Rolling Stone's failed rape article.

This is an unnerving view into the mindset of leftwing journalism. Everything is politics. Politics equals the rightwing is always wrong.

It never seemed to occur to the article's author that the Rolling Stone's article failed because it was not factually based.

Apparently the author doesn’t know the history of a certain revoked Pulitzer Prize.

Elisabeth Stoker Banning will someday likely file for divorce from a ‘husband’ or “substitute lover” who was ‘never there’ and who didn’t understand her. Who cares about her.

It's time to take an entirely new approach with these idiots. How about we PUSH BACK and say that these people lie when they tell lies.

No she used a leftwing strategy to make a leftist point. Happens all the time. If fact this author herself is using a leftwing strategy to make a leftist point.

How many times, and in how many ways, can we say, “The described series of incidents NEVER HAPPENED the way it was related in the screed,”

Other incidents, at other times, may have happened. And when they actually did, it would be incumbent to tell the tale, so far as the facts could be discovered and verified. But this was a complete fabrication, made to “illustrate” a point, but in fact, spreading lies and misconceptions, that in the real world, impacted persons innocent of this particular mischief. As a result, there will be those who were legitimately a victim, who shall now fail to step forward, because the whole tale will be dismissed as a “distraction” and a “fabrication”.

Yeah. If it weren't for George Bush, this never would have happened! And Rush Limbaugh. And the Christians. And rich people. Yeah, it's all THEIR fault.

The right, on the other hand, tends to understand politics on the individual level, which fits in neatly with a general obsession with the capital-i Individual.

That is because in a free and rational society, each man is an end in himself, and the moral corollary of this principle is that the individual is the unit of value. The opposite of this is the altruism and collectivism of libtards, which leads to statism and socialism.

The author does make somewhat of a point. Though not the one she intended to.

She claims that leftwing methods see oppression as systemic. Presumably meaning that no actual cases of oppression need be cited to prove it exists. This allows them to create “solutions” for problems without first demonstrating their existence.

If you get down into the dirt with actual cases, like UVA, Zimerman and Ferguson, your claims can be disproven with facts.

Much better to stick with, often false, statistics and anonymous anecdotes. Those can’t be disproven.

The astonishing history of recent hoax racist incidents ties into this, of course. If you can’t find actual incidents of racial oppression, you’re perfectly justified in inventing some to illustrate the “deeper truth” you are sure exists.

IOW, what she’s saying is that the Left presumes a problem exists. Actual evidence of individual cases is and should be irrelevant.

The Right works from actual evidence in individual cases to deduce whether a problem is real or not.
