President of Yemen flees by sea amid rebel advance in south [another Obama/Clinton success]

President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi fled Yemen by sea Wednesday as Shiite rebels and their allies moved on his last refuge in the south, captured its airport and put a bounty on his head, officials said.

The departure of the close U.S. ally and the imminent fall of the southern port of Aden pushed Yemen further toward a violent collapse. It also threatened to turn the impoverished but strategic country into another proxy battle between the Middle East's Sunni powers and Shiite-led Iran.

On Wednesday, Saudi ambassador to the United States Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir said his country had begun airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Jubeir declined to say whether the Saudi campaign involved U.S. intelligence assistance.

Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies believe the Shiite rebels, known as Houthis, are tools for Iran to seize control of Yemen and say they intend to stop the takeover. The Houthis deny they are backed by Iran.

There are time when I think the best for the US would be to get completely out of the Middle East (with the exception of Israel of course) and let the blood thirsty, 9th Century mentality maniacs have at it and kill as many of each other as possible.

This isn't religious per se. They've run up against Malthusian limits. The population has gone up almost 6x in 60 years. The wastelands of Yemen cannot support 24m people and the oil, which was always sparse, has just about run out. Back in the old days, their recourse would have been to raid and/or conquer their wealthier neighbors. In the modern era, wealthy countries get to buy expensive but far superior weaponry. Yemen cannot conquer Saudi Arabia because the Saudis have better gear. And the US wouldn't let Yemen conquer Saudi Arabia. So they fight in Yemen proper to decide who gets to eat, and who doesn't. The Sunni Shiite split is just a convenient way of dividing the sides up. If they were all Shiite or all Sunni, it would have been an inter-tribal war just like Somalia. Bottom line is that when Allah was handing out land, Yemenites drew the short straw. They got very little oil and very little rain. Now, this is a country that could benefit from population control measures.
