One of the three men who "buried alive" 26 schoolchildren and their bus driver was granted release from prison nearly 40 years after the infamous kidnapping in Chowchilla, Calif.
After 20 attempts at procuring parole, James Schoenfeld, 63, was granted release from a San Luis Obispo prison, where he's been locked up since 1977, according to the Fresno Bee.
His recommended release date will be determined over the next few months and handed to Gov. Jerry Brown, corrections department spokesman Bill Sessa said. The governor can choose whether to follow the parole order, modify it or send it back to the parole board for reconsideration.

Where’s Dirty Harry when we need him?
Epstein has an alibi. He has a note from his mother.
I suppose we should be thankful they served forty years. In parts of Europe, it would have been five.
I remember reading about that horror when it happened.
In a just America, people who commit such evils would not still be drawing breath.

After-effects[edit]
Three years after the kidnapping, a study of 23 of the children by Dr. Lenore C. Terr of UC San Francisco concluded that they had been traumatized by the ordeal, resulting in panic attacks, nightmares of kidnappings leading to their deaths, and personality changes.
Twenty of the children were afraid of being kidnapped again, and 21 were afraid of such things as “cars, the dark, the wind, the kitchen, mice, dogs and hippies.”
I recall reading the Time Mag article about this when I was a kid.
They should have thrown away the key!
I have that paperback. Bought it back in the late 70’s.
All of those bastards should rot in prison or have been eliminated. Attempted murder of the children and the driver.
The driver and a few strong kids pushed those batteries off their tomb. The driver has since passed on. I think his name was Ray.
I remember when it happened. It was so bizarre. Who buries a bus?
I dont think they buried the bus. They buried a truck in which to imprison the kids.
I saw on my wife’s facebook an article about a 23-year old gal that goes around the country speaking about child abduction. She was groomed by an online pervert 10 years ago, locked up in a basement, raped and beaten and rescued by the FBI after 4 days of this. (With the guy sharing it all online).
The monster’s sentence is up in 9 years! (Not sure if he can be out sooner with parole.)
Crazy.
Can Governor Moonbeam choose to bury the parole board members on a school bus and let this creep pour gasoline on them and then toss in a lit match?
Amazing she survived and was able to function after that... she sounds blessed.
Governor Moonbeam still causing trouble.
I remember it was all over the news in the Bay Area. I was around 13 at that time.
I can’t believe I actually still remember that!
I was about sixteen.
