San Francisco is Worst Market for Renters: Report
NBC Bay Area ^

Posted on 04/21/2015 1:43:19 PM PDT by nickcarraway

San Francisco is the worst market for renters, according to Forbes' latest list.

The average rent in San Francisco is over $2,800. And the vacancy rate is only 3.6 percent. It is only slightly better in the East Bay and South Bay.

The average rent in Oakland is about $1,800 a month, but the vacancy rate is even worse than San Francisco at 2.9 percent. In San Jose, rents run about $2,200.

Still, Forbes listed all three cities as the worst places for renters nationwide.

More importantly, SF is a small area, and every space that can be built has been. You basically have to tear something down to build. The rest of the Bay Area is almost as bad because the open space has all been closed off for building as “greenbelts”. I live in the Sacramento area, where there’s plenty of open land to build, and prices are a third of SF.

Pacific Heights with Michael Keaton is a hilarious view of their rental rules. It’s a cheesy horror movie, but more of a black comedy. Highly recommended.

High taxes, high cost of living, crowded freeways, illegal aliens all over the place, liberal politics. Too much for me. I prefer my red state, thank you.

Why anyone would want to live there is beyond me.

Folsom Street Fair, of course!

“I like the weather here, the employment salary is very high, our property value goes up about $5000 per year, getting out is great, beach at Santa Cruz is one hour, wine country and redwoods one hour, Yosemite 4 hours, the ocean I can hear from my back yard. Great neighbors. Lots of excellent restaurants... lots of reasons to live here.”

Amen! see my post below. These people prattle on in their self-contrived ignorance, most likely having never ventured anywhere outside their cow-turd littered local landscape. Here in California, you can pretty much have whatever environment suits you, and visit all the others as you point out in less than 4 hours max. Plus Jerry Brown can’t live forever!

A dumpy, dirty, town filled with wannabee artists, dykes, and really faggy queers, plus the pleasure of hundreds (or maybe thousands) of street beggars — with crazy high property values, which means its the first place to burn down when the Have Nots’ revolution comes.

Personally, I was immediately suspicious about a notoriously gay city with a neighborhood called “the Tenderloin”.

I guess you must not live in any of Texas’ “metropolitan areas.”Talk about sorry traffic systems and loads of liberals, and you have the most border with Mexico of any state (so much for no illegals), I guess you can be o.k. out in cow patty land, but I recall driving through Paris, Texas a few years ago and it was like driving through East Germany. The main drag was 50% closed stores. Reminded me of the Grapes of Wrath. San Francisco RE values are high because wages and salaries are also way above average and most residents can afford the prices. The young folks who work at Google and Facebook like the city, so their firms pick them up at their homes in The City in Class A motor coaches, and drive them to their offices while serving them breakfast on board. Facebook is thinking of private ferry service from SF to their HQ in Menlo Park. We aren’t asking you to live the way we do, but you shouldn’t be commenting negatively on something about which you know little or nothing.

Lived there awhile, its a great city in many ways. Lots of nutballs for sure; but its a big area and lots of good people. Like most places.
Used to be a strong military area.

You mean like driving on the 5 with the top down?

“You mean like driving on the 5 with the top down?”

In a manner of speaking. The feed lots on I 5 are a little “ripe,” but virtually no one lives by them, unlike some other areas of the country.

I am not sure your logic of the reason rent is high is because all here are queers?

LOL! No logic intended, I'm sure it was just taking the opportunity to take a gratuitous slam on San Francisco.
Kind of like when I do the same to France. The "logic" can be very stretched, but I'll join in the 'surrender-monkey' chorus when the opportunity arises. And I like the French -- they just offer low hanging fruit for a cheap quip.
But you have to admit that San Francisco is aspiring for the title of 'Sodom and Gomorrah West'. The Sodomite population might 'only' be 7%, however they seem to own the local Media and the local government. Too many parades celebrating bestial perverseness.

But I agree, weather, location, scenery wise -- it is a pretty nice city. I lived there years ago when I went to High School (years ago)...

If they would just raise the minimum wage to 40 dollars an hour everyone could afford rent and this problem would go away...

I’m paying about $1,450 in North Dallas. But that is for a 1,500 square foot 3 bedroom place, not counting the garage and 300 square foot patio!

“using 1/3 of income for rent yields an income of $100,000. normally that would mean two income earners with decent jobs.”

Two fulltime workers with decent jobs would certainly earn more than $100,000.

I think people on this site focus on the politics of the Bay Area, as making that area undesirable.

Oh I know, you would not believe how often they wish my wife and our kids would be blown up by a nuke along with about 7 million others - great group of folks.
