Why turn drug smugglers into heroes for our kids?
The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) ^ | 1st May 2015 | Piers Akerman

THE nauseating canonisation of executed convicted heroin smugglers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran was well under way before their corpses had been returned to their families.

At Castle Hill High, the words “merciless”, “barbaric”, “futile” and “weak” were plastered on the noticeboard on Wednesday by principal Vicki Brewer after students expressed horror at the executions of Chan and Sukumaran, and six others in Indonesia.

“I think it’s affecting students and staff, they’ve been chilled by it, haunted by it and there’s been certainly a good deal of reflection and discussion about the ethical and moral dilemmas this has caused,” she told the Hills Shire Times.

On Tuesday night, two Australian citizens were executed by firing squad in Indonesia for drug trafficking. It's been a major news story in Australia, particularly pushed by the left wing bleeding heart press, although a lot of Australian conservatives are also opposed to the death penalty, and Australia has a bipartisan policy of doing whatever is diplomatically possible to advocate for Australians facing execution overseas.

But some of what is happening now is getting quite ridiculous - we have High Schools pushing a very clear political agenda on their children (as a secondary school teacher myself, this drives me crazy - I believe it is my overwhelming role to teach kids how to think, not what to think) and the Australian Catholic University creating scholarships in memory of the drug smugglers...

Never mind the politics - what message is this sending to kids about illegal drugs?

When I was quite young -- 1960s -- I remember a Public Service Announcement which featured a number of people doing and saying things against drugs, but the 5 second piece of it that I really remember was a long-haired, very bearded Hippie, wearing some poncho/blanket thing, very seriously explaining that if he were traveling in a foreign country, he would be smart enough not to carry any drugs. It just wasn't worth it.

It was probably a cheesy spot, and I haven't seen it in about 45+ years --

But I remember it.

Stupid people who break laws and do it in the wrong spot should not be idolized by anyone.

If these two dirtbags - and boy they were dirtbags - had been shot by the thugs they were muling for, the Australian government and the social justice warriors wouldn't mention it.

Chan and Sukumaran knew very well they were risking their lives.

We hear sob stories about poor people being locked up in 3rd world hell holes but few of them are really innocent under the laws there. Obviously there are exceptions but one should never live with the fantasy that the laws of home apply everywhere.

I agree. Let’s start with the money laundering banks, DEA and CIA.

Similarly, I have seen stories of "sweet old grandmothers" who run afoul of the police and people say: "Awwwwwwwww, she's just a little ol' lady!"

We're at the point where that ol' lady could have been rolling in the mud at Woodstock, tripping her head off while Hendrix was wailing on the guitar. Old ladies were once young, and they may not have been so innocent.

Sob stories stopped impressing me a long time ago. The poor little victims are only very rarely poor little victims. Some of them are nasty pieces of work.

Ah yes, the evil CIA. Enjoy the march in Baltimore tonight and say hello to your pal Al Sharpton for me.

No, Al is your buddy. You remember Al worked for the FBI, another bastion of federal corruption.
But maybe Anderson Cooper did some CNN reporting on the riots. He worked for your beloved CIA.

You're hilarious.

Sharpton was deposed by the FBI's lawyers regarding the Genovese crime family - back when he was stabbed by a suspected Genovese soldier.

Anderson Cooper was a summer intern at the CIA when he was in college.

You are really reaching.

Do you actually trust the Feds and their 3 letter Gestapo organizations?

There probably some good individuals there, but the whole idea behind the Federal government as it exists today is to oppress and torment the people.

We are definitely NOT a free republic. We are run by a Satanic elite oligarchy. Our government is in the process of waging war against the people. The top enemies are conservatives, vets, gun owners, and Bible based Christians, and the Feds are overtly and intentionally directing their legal, police and propaganda media against these groups. Hopefully, you’re not a member of any of those groups. The Federal government is also making our military weak and vulnerable to outside enemies and this is intentional.

If you think that’s hilarious, then the joke’s on you. Wake up wideawake, this isn’t the 1980s and Ronald Reagan is not the president It’s a brave new world.
