From the short transcript I read, it sounds not so much like he was trying to injure himself as that he was being rowdy. The guy tested positive for heroine and pot (I think it was) So he was high, he wanted out and he did what Bolt did when Bolt was in the dog catcher van (Pixar movie) — he slammed himself against the door to try to jar it open. I’m not saying that was smart. I am saying that’s what a drugged and crazed individual might do.
Many arrested also kick out the window of the back seat of the cruiser too.

Gray was a well known showboat. He’d go limp, scream and yell for doctors or lawyers once cops would cuff him. All an effort to attract attention in hopes it could be used against the arresting officers later. It’s not a stretch at all to assume he was performing a self “tune up” as “proof” for an excessive force suit.
I know it’s being said now that he was under the influence of heroin and pot. No one will care about the pot, but the heroin, if true, will play a HUGE roll in the case.
