Full TItle The Computers are Listening:How the NSA converts spoken words into searchable text.

Most people realize that emails and other digital communications they once considered private can now become part of their permanent record.

But even as they increasingly use apps that understand what they say, most people don’t realize that the words they speak are not so private anymore, either.

Top-secret documents from the archive of former NSA contractor Edward Snowden show the National Security Agency can now automatically recognize the content within phone calls by creating rough transcripts and phonetic representations that can be easily searched and stored.

I wonder how easy it is to create a fake entry in someone’s “permanent record?”

considering that an app is allegedly doing voice the recognition ..no actual record of what was said will likely exist... after the alleged “translation”

What am I to do find a cow pasture to speak a private conversation about impeaching obama or eradicating islam, too late anyway there is already enough evidence here on FR to put me away till death in political prison.

I just hope it is somewhere with a decent climate, as quickly as things are developing, I suspect it will not be long now.

They’ve been able to do this for decades. Way back when I was just a weee programer we used to joke about tying up the NSA’s computers by getting lot of people to say “plutonium” on the phone.

Anyone remember when Jimmah Cattah the Incompetent originally suggested this back in the 1970s?

The NSA hasn’t any better business than violating most of the Bill of Rights.

For you to do it? Darn near impossible.

For "them" ... someone on the inside who has access to the relevant computer systems ... trivial. Properly fabricating the content to make it plausible would (as always) be the hard part. Inserting it into the record, with falsified dates, is child's play.

The room for abuse by using the stored ‘translations’ is phenomenal. Once the technology is said to have been perfected, and those in power come to accept such as Gospel truth, deceitful privileged elements within the agency will be able to manipulate a targets conversation history to achieve whatever goal they so desire.

Who says you have to be on the phone?

Why doesn’t the NSA just turn on everyone’s computer and cell microphones and deliver a transcript of every voice everywhere within earshot of a microphone into their data center?

What, the dikes just yell at each other all day long and drown out sentient conversation?

;-)
