Aboriginal leader Noel Pearson has challenged indigenous Australians to get over their traumatic history in the same way that Jews survived the Holocaust.
Mr Pearson yesterday declared that alcohol was damaging indigenous communities far more than the past wrongs inflicted on Aborigines.
I honestly believe people can rise above historic trauma, otherwise well lose agency and were defeated by history, he told the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists annual congress in Brisbane.
I have to push back against too much attribution to past, to peoples present troubles. Whatever the scars and the burdens that people coming out of the Holocaust suffered, they nevertheless endured, and they laid foundations for their families."
Mr Pearson said it was a policy and leadership convenience" to blame the wrongs of the past such as removing Aboriginal children from their parents for the poverty, violence and disadvantage now rife in indigenous communities.
....
Mr Pearson said welfare dependence had created an industry of white workers to service indigenous people trapped on the dole. We now have multinational corporations that deliver work-for-the-dole programs in remote communities, painting rocks," he said. Weve constructed a major industry out of indigenous disadvantage. Australia spent $33 billion last year in the name of indigenous people... yet the results are the poorest you can imagine."
Mr Pearson said white Australia believed indigenous people had a right to welfare".
All of the middle-class people on good salaries with good homes and their children in good schools are telling my mob we have a right to live at the bottom," he said.
Dont tell me we have a right to $15,000 a year down at the bottom. What kind of a right is that? We have a right to a job.

Sadly the some of people in America who most need to read this article.. couldnt if they tried..and the others will likely never get the opportunity.
America’s blacks need some tough love like that.
Time to stop whining and get back in the game.
Can we make this guy our president?
Real hope comes from God.
It might actually be true that a lot of current wealth is old wealth, not sustainable (to borrow a term from the greenies) and will dissipate sooner or later.
When I think of 60s and the improvements that have been made since then concerning racism, I am shocked to hear Blacks claim nobody cares for them.
We have spent many trillions trying to lift those in poverty, only to make it worse.
We have implemented affirmative action.
This has meant more Blacks in Universities, in Police Departments, in high positions across the land, and yet we are told it’s not enough.
On the one hand Blacks call successful Blacks “Uncle Toms”, and on the other they belch if more help isn’t forthcoming.
It has become a damned if you do and damned if you don’t situation.
Now we have Black political leaders in most areas of the nation, and some of them are absolutely unfit to be in any leadership position.
We have torn down the leadership infrastructure to install these people. It has clearly been a backwards move for the major cities they are involved in.
After all this time, it would seem that people should proceed from here on their own merits.
Affirmative action has had mixed success. Unqualified people are been given power.
It’s time to go back to merit hiring and merit education.
This isn’t working, and it isn’t appreciated anyway.
No matter what you do we are the scourge of the Black community, always to blame for everything.
This hasn’t worked. It has been decades. Time to stop it and let Blacks fend for themselves.
A surprising number of them will do much better, if they have to, to survive.
Once again, great post. Many blacks, including highly educated ones, have come to expect a free ride. They are “entitled” to it.
The problem is human nature. If you give somebody something for nothing, sooner or later, they will RESENT you for having done it.
Black, white, brown, it doesn’t matter.
I agree with you too.
I can’t fail to observe that asians come here and rip the place up. Hispanics come here and do the same thing.
Blacks...
Of course there are exceptions to every rule when it comes to groups, but I think it’s reasoned to observe and come to conclusions.
Cruz should borrow this man’s statements.
” I cant fail to observe that asians come here and rip the place up. “
I was partners with 2 Asian brothers in a mortgage company for over a decade in Los Angeles.
I know their basic MO.
1)One family starts a small business with private money from a wealthy investor
2)They pay off the private loan, and obtain a much larger credit line with the same private lender.
3) This time, they buy 2 businesses, and bring family members in to run the. They all live very frugally at this juncture, building the 3 businesses, and retiring debt.
4) Once the larger private loan is retired, they become “bankable” to B of A or Wells Fargo. They buy or open several more businesses.
5) They buy homes
Now, they DO work their butts off for at least 5-7 years, but by then, they are millionaires.
This is very much how WE used to build our country. Not so much anymore.
I don’t get a kick out of contrasting this model with the Black communities, but...
But reality is reality.
Yes, it is...
In this instance, I wish it wasn’t. I don’t get a kick out of seeing people live in poverty against their will or by choice.
I generally want to see every able-bodied person working in this nation. I believe that pride and accomplishment are very important, and having a job and being productive is the best way to that end.
