An Amtrak train involved in a fatal crash here appears to have been traveling at more than 100 miles an hour as it entered a sharp curve where it derailed Tuesday night, killing at least six people, according to two people with knowledge of the investigation.
The speed limit in that section of track drops to 50 miles per hour, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.
Investigators are focusing on the possibility that excessive speed was a factor in the derailment, one of these people said. The locomotive and all seven passenger cars of the train went off the tracks at a tight curve at Frankford Junction, north of Philadelphia city center. Multiple cars overturned, severely injuring some passengers and pinning others. Six people were killed and more than 200 were injured, including eight who were in critical condition.
Amtrak officials notified some employees on a Wednesday conference call that excessive speed was believed to have contributed to the crash, said one of these people, who was briefed on the contents of the call.

Maybe AMTRACK should teach its engineers Newton’s 1st law of inertia.

After this criminally negligent behavior by the operator of this train, the railroads can kiss off any chance they might have had on an extension.
Simpler? Yup. Simple? No. They've been working on this for years - well over a decade. Various PTC solutions are being rolled out. I don't know much about the system Amtrak uses but I have worked on other PTC solutions. It's incredibly difficult to get right. For one thing, you essentially have to get FRA approval for the way you've handled each mile of track.
But if you notice almost all the deadly train crashes in recent years come down to drivers not paying attention and going too fast or running into other trains. This is a solvable problem, one that is in the process of being solved. There are a lot of people who will be looking at this incident and determining if the current solutions could have prevented it, believe me.

Acela Express trains are the fastest trainsets in the Americas; the highest speed they attain is 150 mph (240 km/h) in revenue service.

It must be stupid day I guess . Those tracks are not capable of high speed travel around curves. These are not high speed systems. The train is probably capable of plenty of speed on the straights.

It's a safe bet that human error is the one and only relevant contributing factor in this crash.
Amtrak runs Acela trains on this line and regularly exceeds 130 mph on some parts of the line.

And they ARE going to get the extension, whether Congress likes it or not. The locomotive manufacturing industry simply does not have the capacity to meet their customers' requirements under the Federal mandate. Everyone in the industry knew that mandate was a joke when it was passed.

My experience on Amtrack is that there is generally not able to exceed 60 or so.
On my trip back from Seattle to Syracuse last year it was 0 mph because they had cancellation after cancellation and I ended up flying
